This morning, I was awoken by my dog, a 25-pound Shiba Inu, barking incessantly. I go outside to see what the problem is, and I see him having a standoff with this foot-long snake, writhing, hissing, biting and shaking its tail--all common behaviors for any cornered snake that evolves in rattlesnake country. However, clearly not a pit viper (head wrong shape, and no characteristic pits), so no danger to the dog.
