Not rules, but my notes on how to quickly convert a photo to IR using the free software called Gimp are
1) Duplicate layer
2) Click bottom layer
3) Select "Colors" from menu at top, select "Componets," then select "Mono Mixer." Change Red to 1, change Green to 0, change Blue to 0
4) Click on upper layer (on right side, click on thumbnail of the top layer)
5) Slightly above the 2 layers, change "Normal" to "Overlay."
6) Slightly under "Mode Overlay," change "Opacity" to 50%
7) Right click on top layer and choose "Merge Down."
To save, go to File and choose "Export as" and choose name...
