Cicadas emerge from the ground in huge numbers after 17 years in the soil. They emerge from their larval state to fly about for a few eggs, mate, and then lay eggs in plant stems, as shown in the picture, and then die. The eggs hatch and make their way into the soil for another 17 years. What a brief fling they enjoy!
