Petra was a city of the Nabatean Kingdom inhabited by the Arabs in ancient times. This structure is known as the Treasury, and was carved out of a sandstone rock face around the first century AD, as the mausoleum and crypt of the Nabatean King Aretas IV. The area's Bedouins named it The Treasury in the 19th century, as they believed it contained treasures.
