Paranoid Schizophrenic (I think)

On Sunday (November 4th, 2012) evening in the 800 block of Granville street, an out of control male is restrained by XXX police officers whilst waiting for an ambulance to take the male to hospital. The male was screaming for his mum, as well as, at the police to kill him and not to kill him. His mum, somewhat distraught, arrived on the scene and had to be restrained by police while being comforted by a friend, just as her son was being carted away to the ambulance. PHOTO Â© JRS

What I have to comment may be related to cultural differences but I have to say it:
For me this is a violation of the pictured mans dignity. I can not understand how anybody would post the picture of a person in such an intimate moment on the internet?! I mean the guy is recognisable.
And people vote it as beeing good? Street photography needs to be respectful. If you cross the line you become voyeuristic.

When taken, Tuntsch, this was taken as a spot news photo. As for being an intimate moment, I think, we may have different ideas of "intimacy". As for being respectful, trust me, this particular photo, IMHO, would be considered respectful. Cheers and thanks for looking and, more importantly, commenting, I do appreciate peoples comments.

Hi Hans,

Yep, I know what you mean and had this been taking place in persons house or abode, I, definitely, wouldn't be shooting it, not even though a window unless it was part of a story and we had access to the persons abode. Also, OOC, what part of Switzerland do you live in? I've visited Switzerland several times, albeit before photography was a word in my vocabulary ;)

Thanks Jack, this puts things in perspective.
I am glad you are open to a discussion with an amateur. After all the public areas of DPR are not edited.

About intimacy: Do you Canadians just distinguish between "public life" and "private life" ("Privatsphäre" in german)? Or do you have an additional expression for the innermost self ("Intimsphäre") which contains not only ones sexuality but things like emotions, thoughts, illness, and so on? And are these terms used legally?

Off topic: I live in the german part of Switzerland where we are all very civilized and share only pictures of cows and mountains with the rest of the world😉

Glad to put you at ease, Hans :). As 'public life' and 'private life', I think, sadly, for some photographers there is no difference :( but, for most photographers/photojournalists, there is a difference. If one is out and about (streets/sidewalks/parks et al, that would be considered "public life", but, indoors -- houses, flats, stores et al -- would be considered "private life". As for the "public life" areas, that is where discretion becomes involved when shooting the subjects and for me, personally, I use discretion when (young) kids are involved but, if they're young adults and upwards, they are, usually, fair game ;).

As for me in Switzerland, all the big cities, Zurich, Basel, Bern, Geneva, Lucerene, Lausanne along with some smaller cities, Fribourg, Visp, Tash (SP?), Interlaken, Zermatt and a number of other places, I'll have to check the map to remember :D Also, I hit "carnevale' in Lucerne, but, so far, not the one in Basel.
