This is the fourth in the series: ‘Shrinking the world in seven stages’. Imagine you have been asked to provide one or two creative and inspirational illustrations for a series of lectures. This is on how the telegraph - the Victorian internet - facilitated international government and commerce. Traeger's Pedal Transceiver

The Pedal Wireless was a radio transmitter-receiver powered by a pedal-driven generator. It was developed by inventor Alfred Traeger in 1929 as a way of providing radio communications to remote homesteads in the Australian outback. There were no mains or generator power available, and batteries would have been too expensive. Traeger was instrumental in the establishment and success of the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia.
