Missed It by THAT much, Part 1 Challenge finished on Sunday, 13 Dec 2009 Everybody has photos where they juuuust missed the perfect moment. A blink that spoils a portrait. Someone turns away right as the shutter is tripped. A capture made just after the peak of action. Sometimes, however, these "failures" can be more interesting than the "keepers". Show us your "just missed" shots that you find are more interesting than if you'd "nailed it" as you originally intended. Please read and follow the additional rules. Thanks
Winner: Alderely Edge Dawn
Slide or Film scans - The early you Challenge finished on Sunday, 13 Dec 2009 Did you start on film? Do you still have a great film library that you are trying to move to digital media? Show us the oldest shot you can find that you are still proud of and did a nice recovery of with a film or print scan or even copied a print with your digital camera and good software. Tell us about the shot and what it means to you. Tell us what you did to scan and fix it up. Original shot has to pre-date modern digital photography equipment, but can benefit from modern digital processing - you're on your honor, here. Previous DP Review challenge entries NOT ALLOWED.
Monolithic Color: Gray Challenge finished on Saturday, 12 Dec 2009 Show us a COLOR image that says "Gray!" Show us lots and lots of gray. Multiple shades of gray is ideal, but make sure we can tell that it's a color image. Is your image gray enough? If a viewer doesn't say "Whoa, that's almost depressing it's so gray!" then it's not gray enough. Ideally, aim for 18% gray, but just make sure it doesn't look mostly black or mostly white (or mostly black and white). Be careful not to include too much color otherwise the viewer's eye is drawn to that color and the gray effect is diminished.
Winner: Ice waterfall
Sony Alpha Only - Slow Shutter - Hand Held Challenge finished on Thursday, 10 Dec 2009 Steady Shot INSIDE stabilisation is a feature on all alpha cameras, helping both reduce camera shake and allow you to use much lower shutter speeds without ruining your images. It also opens up a whole world of creative flexibility. In this challenge we are looking for the best hand held image that shows use of a slow shutter speed.
My own backyard Challenge finished on Thursday, 10 Dec 2009 From the grand to the sublime, we will shift our focus from volcanoes to the natural world in your own backyard. Defining "backyard" (a North American term) for the world is a bit difficult as not everyone has a "backyard" or "back garden". So let's define it and make it the same for all: the photos entered into this challenge must be made within 10m of your primary residence (your home, not your cottage!). The photos must also be of naturally occurring subjects or phenomena. In realistic terms, this may also include garden plants and animals but no people, swings or sprinklers, please!
