Bare Trees Challenge finished on Friday, 12 Feb 2010 After the colors of fall fade away, we are left with what appears to be the skeleton of the tree...not very becoming...or is it? With the bare tree as the subject (no people or animals) look for the beauty of textured bark, gracefully twisting limbs or gnarly knots. Close ups are fine!

Better Off Without It Challenge finished on Thursday, 11 Feb 2010 This is a challenge for inpainted images. When something bad -- dust shadows, red eyes, ugly obstructions, etc. -- appears in one of your photos, you can remove that bad thing and replace it with a credible thing that doesn't distract attention from the subject of your photo. General inpainting used to be very difficult, but digital post-processing tools like GREYCstoration and GIMP's "smart-remove-selection" plug-in (both freely available) automate the process, and manual inpainting using "healing" tools and custom brushes is fairly easy.

Beauty in the ugly Challenge finished on Wednesday, 10 Feb 2010 Enter something (usually considered) ”ugly” photographed in an interesting way, so that the result is beautiful. I am highly aware these terms have different meanings to different people – do your best and let the voters decide (and don’t take the votes too personally). Still, I’ll surely disqualify photos of pretty young ladies, blooming roses etc. Creativity encouraged - if you can surprise me and the voters with your interpretation, please do. Questions and conversations addressed to the Challenges and galleries -forum, please.
