"Dead Space"? Challenge finished on Sunday, 14 Feb 2010 "Music is the silence between the notes"-Claude DeBussy. It's not always necessary to fill the frame with the subject to create a powerful image. Sometimes, the "dead space" reveals as much about the story behind a photo as the main subject. However, there can be a subtle, yet profound, difference between ineffective dead space and "silence" which adds to the impact of the photo (just as it adds impact to music). This is likely going to be a difficult challenge for both entrants and voters. As such, I ask voters to really give each entry careful consideration. Thanks.

Your image must be of a girl / young lady ( human not animal or otherwise ) between the age of 3 and 30. Please no babies , middle aged or old woman. ( sorry, I am not being ageist its just the challenge!) . Your girl should be travelling on a bus not any other form of transport. Your shot should as best it can indicate she is travelling on a bus. Your girl can be seated/ standing / lying down whatever. Please try and include only one girl in your shot although other parts of people in your shot may be unavoidable. YOUR IMAGE MUST NOT BE AN ADVERTISEMENT ON A BUS. It must be a real live person.
Dramatic Light: Soft Focus Challenge finished on Saturday, 13 Feb 2010 For years, photographers demanded - and received - sharper and sharper lenses. Some photographers bucked that trend, realizing that a slightly obscured lens could create dream-like photos. They tried to increase this "soft focus" effect using a special lens, petroleum jelly applied to a clear filter, shooting through gauze or special filters with diffused coatings (e.g. Cokin). Most filters blended light colors into dark, but some blend dark areas into light. Digital images create new opportunities and there are hundreds of ways to achieve a soft focus effect. This challenge demands that you demonstrate one of those techniques withOUT relying on specialized software or plug-ins. In other words, you have to create the effect from scratch (and that will required a bit of research).
