Butterflies: Peacocks of the Insect World Challenge finished on Saturday, 07 Sep 2013 In this challenge, show us beautiful butterflies, Order Lepidoptera. They are the flamboyant members of the insect world. They (generally) hold their resting wings upright. (Moths are more modest in appearance than butterflies, and hold their resting wings flat. They had their own challenge recently, so any moths which flutter into the challenge will be DQ'd.) Show us butterflies alive and outside in their natural environment, on leaves, flowers, trees, just doing what comes naturally to them, not inside under artificial conditions. Macro and close-up shots welcome. Check http://bugguide.net/node/view/57/bgpage for more information on butterflies. Size: MAXIMUM 1,600px on LONGER SIDE.

Legacy of Nuclear Waste Challenge finished on Saturday, 07 Sep 2013 Nuclear waste is piling up everywhere. Nobody wants to put it in their back yard. But what is nuclear waste? What does it look like? Where are we going to put it? How are we going to transport it? Please don't break any laws or injure yourself in trying to get pictures for this challenge. Nuclear waste is highly dangerous. Use a long zoom lens. Don't get close. Duh. Images captured from remotely controlled cameras or robotically controlled cameras are acceptable as long as you owned the equipment. People forget about this problem that grows every day and still has no solution. Please vote for the most jarring image that truly reminds us of what it is that we face.

Full-Frame Diagonal Fisheyes (Brand Must Match Body) Challenge finished on Thursday, 05 Sep 2013 - Image must be taken with a fisheye lens of the same brand as the camera body used. - Lens native format to camera sensor format relationship must be "full frame" — i.e. the lens must not be cropped by the sensor and the sensor must not be cropped by the lens. - It must be a "diagonal" fisheye projection (no black areas visible) — not a "circular" fisheye projection (a circular image against black). In the old days a "diagonal" fisheye was commonly known as a "full-frame fisheye" (different meaning of 'full-frame' than today's industry marketing jargon). Examples of acceptable combos: - Olympus 8mm Fisheye on Olympus 4/3" sensor body. - Panasonic 8mm Fisheye on Panasonic 4/3" sensor body. - Canon 8-15mm Fisheye on any Canon body (set focal length to match lens to sensor format for diagonal fisheye, see p.8 of lens owner's manual) - Nikon 10.5mm Fisheye on Nikon DX sensor body - etc. Read the other rules below.
