Dramatic Light: Soft Focus Challenge finished on Saturday, 13 Feb 2010 For years, photographers demanded - and received - sharper and sharper lenses. Some photographers bucked that trend, realizing that a slightly obscured lens could create dream-like photos. They tried to increase this "soft focus" effect using a special lens, petroleum jelly applied to a clear filter, shooting through gauze or special filters with diffused coatings (e.g. Cokin). Most filters blended light colors into dark, but some blend dark areas into light. Digital images create new opportunities and there are hundreds of ways to achieve a soft focus effect. This challenge demands that you demonstrate one of those techniques withOUT relying on specialized software or plug-ins. In other words, you have to create the effect from scratch (and that will required a bit of research).

Better Off Without It Challenge finished on Thursday, 11 Feb 2010 This is a challenge for inpainted images. When something bad -- dust shadows, red eyes, ugly obstructions, etc. -- appears in one of your photos, you can remove that bad thing and replace it with a credible thing that doesn't distract attention from the subject of your photo. General inpainting used to be very difficult, but digital post-processing tools like GREYCstoration and GIMP's "smart-remove-selection" plug-in (both freely available) automate the process, and manual inpainting using "healing" tools and custom brushes is fairly easy.

Beauty in the ugly Challenge finished on Wednesday, 10 Feb 2010 Enter something (usually considered) ”ugly” photographed in an interesting way, so that the result is beautiful. I am highly aware these terms have different meanings to different people – do your best and let the voters decide (and don’t take the votes too personally). Still, I’ll surely disqualify photos of pretty young ladies, blooming roses etc. Creativity encouraged - if you can surprise me and the voters with your interpretation, please do. Questions and conversations addressed to the Challenges and galleries -forum, please.
