Nature's Graffiti Challenge finished on Saturday, 28 Nov 2015 Before humans left their marks on walls and buildings, nature was already demonstrating graffiti in interesting places. Show us some examples of this. It may be carvings by beetles under tree bark, snail trails, leaves with wandering paths beneath their surfaces caused by tiny insects, tidal marks in the beach sand... Please, no graffiti or markings made by humans or domestic pets, and minimal evidence of man or man-made structures. Macro and close-ups welcome. Size of entry: 1,600 pixels on the longer side.

Artistic Lens Compression Challenge finished on Thursday, 26 Nov 2015 So, first of all let us describe Lens Compression. Compression is a phenomenon that occurs with larger zoom lenses where background elements are pulled forward within the image, and appear much bigger than what they are. The best example I can think of is the Video "Full moon silhouette" by Mark Gee. Search for that video and be amazed. It is not trick photography, it is created by using if I recall correctly a 600mm lens with a 2x lens extender. Anyway, this week let us look at artistically applying the knowledge of compression for shots. Pull mountains closer, or trees or people. The last time I used this technique intentionally was photographing a marathon and taking a shot that made all the runners visible appear grouped together yet they were some distance from each other. Do some research and lets see what you end up with...
