Tree Roots

Challenge #141 in the Life in the Natural World series. Hosted by RuthC.
Challenge has finished
The theme of this challenge is the roots of trees, and the interesting patterns and shapes they display to the world above ground. The tree roots might be old and gnarled, and visible because of the soil movement or erosion, or they may be aerial roots of trees such as fig trees, or mangroves. Perhaps the tree started life in a rocky crevice, and its roots went searching for the soil and nutrients far below. Please, no photos of Bonsai trees, as these are cultivated by man, and designed to display the root system. Size of entry, 1,600px MAXIMUM on the longer side.
