Tokina AT-X Pro 11-16mm f/2.8 DX II

Tokina AT-X Pro 11-16mm f/2.8 DX II

The fastest wideangle zoom for APS-C / DX SLRs

The original Tokina 11-16mm F2.8 was introduced at the end of 2007, gaining a refresh to version II status in 2012. It's still the only fast wideangle zoom for APS-C cameras, and has gained a strong following due to its combination of excellent optics and extremely solid build (something of a Tokina trait). One useful feature is its push-pull focus clutch; pulling the focus ring towards the camera engages manual focus.

Key specifications

  • 17-24mm equivalent range
  • 77mm filter thread
  • Built-in autofocus motor
  • 0.3m minimum focus distance
  • For APS-C / DX cameras only
  • Canon, Nikon and Sony Alpha mounts

The 'type II' version of the 11-16mm gains updated coatings for reduced flare and ghosting, and the Nikon mount model adds a built-in focus motor, which means it will autofocus on all Nikon SLRs. It's available in Canon and Nikon mounts, with a Sony Alpha version due in January 2014; the older model can still be found on sale at a reduced price. The lens will also mount on full frame models, but gives extreme vignetting at shorter focal lengths, so it really needs to be used in crop mode if the camera offers it.
