Sigma 8-16mm F4.5-5.6 DC HSM

Sigma 8-16mm F4.5-5.6 DC HSM

The widest zoom lens for APS-C / DX SLRs

The 8-16mm F4-5.6 is distinguished by being the widest rectilinear lens for APS-C / DX format SLRs. By 'rectilinear', we mean that straight lines in the scene are reproduced as such by the lens, in contrast to fisheye optics which offer a wider field of view but with characteristic strong distortion. The lens offers a field of view equivalent to 12-24mm on full frame - not-so-coincidentally the same as Sigma's 12-24mm F4.5-5.6 II DG HSM, which is the widest zoom for full frame cameras.

Key specifications

  • 12-24mm equivalent range
  • No filter thread
  • Micro-type ultrasonic focus motor
  • 0.24m minimum focus distance
  • For APS-C / DX cameras only
  • Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Sony Alpha, Sigma mounts

The 8-16mm is available in versions to fit all current SLRs (Canon EF, Nikon F, Pentax K, Sony Alpha, and Sigma SA mounts). It uses an ultrasonic-type focus motor for quiet AF, and features a built-in petal-type lens hood. However its bulbous front element means that it can't accept conventional screw-in filters. If you're on a more limited budget, or don't care for such an extreme wide angle, Sigma's 10-20mm F3.5 EX DC HSM is well worth a look too.
