Canon shows forthcoming RF lenses including radical 70-200mm F2.8 IS

Are these new lenses supposed to get me all excited about the R system? It's not working.

Some impressive lenses for sure. All I want now is an impressive RF body to go with them. No more recycled sensors or crippled video. Let’s see new BSI sensors, excellent 4K video, IBIS and more. In a world where $2000 can get you this from at least three competitors there’s no excuse.

Ok Canon, waiting for the pancake 70-200 now.

Where is the small consumer zoom and where is the tiny 40/2.8 pancake to go with the neat, small, cheap RP Canon? Surely they would be no-brainers for capturing upgraders to FF, or for those wanting to optimise the small body size.

For Sony users complaining about extending design: Don’t worry, your adapted EF 70-200 will still be a non-extending zoom!

For people comparing the extended length of this lens to the length of their favorite non-extending version: The center of gravity is still going to sit closer to the grip reducing torque (aka it will feel lighter). From my personal experience using the 100-400, I don’t even notice the changing length while I’m shooting, meanwhile the compact length is much appreciated while packing in a bag.

For those who still prefer the fixed design: With the adapter, your current EF 70-200 should sit roughly in the same place it does now and you’ll have the same feel you currently have. If you were hoping for a smaller lighter feeling 70-200, this is what that looks like. If you want what you already have, you can keep using it.

This is proof once again that Canon has copied Sony !
And what about the dynamic range?

Can Canon keep the same EF size, but add some mms,
e.g. 50-200mm, so there is really no need for a 24-70mm
a 15-35mm f2.8 and a 50-200mm f2.8 will cover 95+% cases for most of the people.

Some impressive looking lenses but I can't help but prefer an internal focusing/zooming lens. The design of the EF 70-200mm is better in my opinion.

this 70-200 mm lens is so short that it reminds me of a catadioptric design.

It appears Canon has decided to truly take advantage of the short back throw (unlike so many of the Sony lenses that have an extended back end that makes the overall setup as deep as an SLR in spite of a tiny camera body. The tradeoff will be a bit more vignetting (a la the M series), but the total Canon package looks like it is going to be quite a bit smaller than the equivalent Sony package in most cases.

Why i have a feeling that it weights the same as the EOS Lense?

I have to say the size of the new 70-200 is the most exciting thing I've read on here for a while. The new Canon camera looks like a good seller, not quite what I need for my work, but a good second step, the EM1X is too specialised and should be applauded for the tech but should have been announced more quietly, (EM5Mk3 and PENFMk2 will be more interesting)

Steep prices for sure but what a lens lineup!

As a Nikon DSLR APS-C user with a couple of Nikon zooms and a prime, the EOS RP has some appeal with an affordable body price. But I don’t need F1.2 or 1.8 lenses. I’ll stay with what I have for now.

Those fast growing lineup of very interesting pro lenses for R mount sadly proves how unambitious Canon is about EOS M.

Damn. When Canon drops the Pro “R” camera, it will hit the ground running with a fine selection of pro lenses. Woe be to Nikon with its selection of very nice but consumer lenses.

Well, yes, they kinda said in their white paper that the new mount gives them increased flexibility in designing fast wides. The 50mm f/1.2, the 28-70 f/2, and now this lens prove that. They (and Nikon) know what they're doing.

but is the rf70200f2.8L a inner zoom lens? it would be damn crazy if they manage to design it as a inner zoom lens in that size.

I have a EF 70-200mm F/4 coffee mug. The EF 70-200mm F/2.8 would be just too much caffeine! The new RF version would make a perfect coffee mug!

When can I buy one (my wife would be more likely to approve of me buying the coffee mug, than a new R camera and the lens)?

About the trick of the 70-200mm. The lens is a telescoping barrel, in the patent application, it's a VERY advanced and weird optical assembly. It's 170mm long when at 70mm and 240mm at 200mm (meaning a lot shorter when stored and used at low FL and longer when used at 200mm).

I personally prefer having such a small size for storage rather than a much bigger internal design. And my other high quality L lenses that telescope don"t have any real world drawbacks, like the 24-70/28-70/100-400/70-300 Ls. Even my 55-250mm STM has a very solid barrel motion and gasket sealing. Well done Canon, on this, the 50, the 85, and the 15-35, all great ideas to excute.

If that 70-200 has the same quality as the ef 70-200 2.8s then it would be a miracle that it is possible to design such a lens. With a shorter flange distance you would think it needs to be bigger!

Great new expensive Canon lenses :). These are/will be fantastic optics, no doubt. But what about some $500-600 primes for the actual target audience of the RP/R cameras? No? ... OK, I'm confused.

This is impressive and it makes me jealous....just...did I miss any word about fast 35 and 24 primes?

They sure know how to make lenses. And they'll deliver these on time, too. I suppose it's an issue of pride, to buy Sony sensors, but that's the only piece of the puzzle that's missing.

This is great for people who want huge expensive lenses but where are the smaller f/1.8 primes or f/4 zooms? Is the 35/1.8 really the only lens out of 10 that will be under $1000? That seems crazy considering the 2 bodies available! Nikon has 35/1.8, 50/1.8, and 24-70/4 under $1k and then a nice small 14-30/4 that I'd take any day over a 15-35/2.8 considering the weight/cost savings. And then Nikon is throwing in a 20/1.8 that should be great for astro.

With the reduced size of the 70-200, I could have a 2 lenses solution for travel: 15-35mm and a 70-200mm, skipping 24-70mm.
The diameter of 70-200mm seems to be large, may need a 82mm UV filter as least

Now that's a really new 70-200 f2.8! Not just a new paint :) Looks too good to believe. Comparing the front (black) part of RF and EF lenses, I suspect, it will extend when zoomed. That black front seems to have outer part of larger diameter and inner, smaller and protruding. It is similar to what you can see on 100-400L II, which extends, when zoomed. It is totally Ok for me, if IQ is the same or better than that of the old, non-extending lenses.
Other lenses of the "holly trinity" are also VERY interesting! Oh gosh... I thought my lenses will serve me many years... Now I don't know how not to upgrade :)

I would be very surprised if that 70-200 is an external zoom design.
No idea how they would manage it otherwise, but turning to an external zoom design for the lens that usually takes the greatest beating on the job seems... unwise. Remember that this is the workhorse for photojournalists, sports photogs, wedding photogs etc... people who move around a lot and bump into things.

Making that lens anything other than "one solid part" doesn't seem logical.

Except few big white lenses in the past I cannot recall that Canon ever did such a thing!? Well, leeking to Sony is obviously far serious that one might think, desperate move from "market leader"... 🤔

External zooming is not that good. Tho you can make it smaller.

About 85mm F1.2 DS, I guess it didnt use APD because otherwise, they need to mention T stop. It's either act like STF lens or Nikon specialized lens. APD lens affects the shutter speed dramatically.
