Leica has today issued a statement on some of the issues experienced by early M8 owners including IR color casts on certain fabrics and occasional banding. The statement states that "Our technical and engineering teams have isolated the source of these concerns and have identified definitive solutions. Over the next two weeks we will communicate our plan to further assure you of your investment in the Leica M8".
Phil: Note that we have been working closely with Leica on this, obviously it made sense for us to delay our review until these issues have been resolved.
Phil UPDATE 12/11/06: Just to clarify my position on the M8. When I wrote my preview article (based on a pre-production camera) I didn't notice any problems, but mostly because I didn't take many photographs with the camera (and a lot were in B&W). I received a production camera at the end of October, as soon as I spotted a problem I immediately contacted Leica (as I have done in the past with other manufacturers) to inform them and to identify if it was an isolated issue with the camera I had or a wider ranging problem. At that time I was under the impression that the M8 was not shipping until the end of November, as things turned out cameras were already on their way to dealers.
My normal method of review is to use the camera for a week or more before getting into the testing and writing proper, this ensures I don't miss problems like this so that they can ideally (a) be resolved by the manufacturer and/or (b) explored in the review. We also never publish findings from the review process until the review is finished. Frankly the M8 isn't at the top of my review list at the moment and will continue to sit in the waiting 'pile' until I receive 'the solution' from Leica.
Dear Friends of Leica,
Customer feedback to us following the start of shipment of the LEICA M8 points to a performance under certain conditions that does not meet the expectations in the Leica brand. Our technical and engineering teams have isolated the source of these concerns and have identified definitive solutions. Over the next two weeks we will communicate a plan to further assure you of your investment in the LEICA M8.
We hope for your understanding and support. Please accept that I will not be able to answer all messages in the forum personally.
