I would buy the 50mm 1.2 RF, it comes with a free Instagram vignetting filter. I'm guessing that and the large size and weight is what makes their lenses superior, and thus leads to the $1000 increase in price over the EF 50mm L lens........

In addition to the advice Marc offered I would say DPR is not the best place if you want to have your images critiqued or if you want to talk about technique. That isn't to say you can't get some great help here and good information but in my experience there are better places for those things. (btw, the manuals are wrapped because those of us in the current day use the electronic versions).

All camera take pictures anyway, but you've got to buy what's being promoted, it's a bit like contributing to charities at end of the year so that you can feel good about it. Your old camera still take great photographs, never mind, and spend your money on what's being advertised.

You are insane if you think a phone takes higher IQ photos than an APS-C.

Phones take horrible to OK mangled snapshots that can be viewed on tiny phones instantly better than an APS-C.

Lots of actual side by side shots are out there, DXOMARK means very little.

In my experience the Pixel and XS have virtually interchangeable IQ, the XS just has slightly more natural/real rendition in side by side tests.

The Z7 indeed is a better all rounder. It doesn't lose much if any image quality with its 64 ISO mode, it it works as a spectacular 4K movie camera, it does 10fps, has way more and way cheaper quality lenses, and is around 30% less money.

I think you guys should resist the temptation to respond to every challenging remark. Any considerate reader of this site has to concede that your team does a thorough job. You don't have to justify your conclusions. You already do, and on a very matter-of-fact and consistently thoughtful basis, right there in the regularly published content. And nobody has to agree. I mean, whatever, right? True pros are just going to buy and use Canon gear no matter what, anyway, especially when the quality of the output matters the most. It is an immutable, unwritten law. A billion hamsters could swim the seven seas. This will never change. The Canon logo is on that monolith they found at Tycho crater back in 1968. @Richard: Although I don't like how D7000shooter said it, I have to agree with his/her sentiment. From your own reviews, the Z7 was awarded a silver compared to it's peers, while the GH5S was awarded Gold. You've had several articles that critisised aspects of the Z7 including suggestions on how it could improve. We're not privy to the your descission process and there might be something that you haven't articulated to we readers, but I would have thought the GH5S would have been the winner based on past reviews and articles on DPReview.

Yes, it is $3400. That puts it more on par with the aR7iii.

By "roughly $2000+" I meant more than around $2000 (the plus symbol was there for a reason). Broadly speaking it's anything more expensive than the Canon EOS R.

HB1969 - I can see how that would be confusing. The GH5S won its Gold award primarily by being a great video camera. It's not a great stills camera, though. The Z7 has its shortcomings (hence Silver) but is a strong all-rounder.

I would it lacks an intervalometer which is shameful considering even cameras as old as the d7000 had them.

That said you can shoot slow motion video out of the camera using the S&Q mode. You will need to edit the video though.

You can set the camera to shoot at 1 fps, 2 fps, 4 fps, 8 fps and faster depending on what you want to shoot.

It has stabilization, that's not true. And the ISO 3200 is pretty usable, especially if you don't need 20mp of your kid/cat.

The stabilization doesn't work for moving subjects, you're still obliged to shoot at around 1/125 sec. to avoid blur.

An F/2.0 lens could give you ISO 3200 in such conditions, not F/2.8, which rapidly becomes around F/4 as you zoom towards standard focal length. F/4 is too dark aperture for indoors even at full frame with usable ISO 40K.

What kind of moving subjects are you shooting indoors? The reality is that the RX100M6 is a perfectly fine camera for indoor shooting. Are you telling us that none of your subjects are willing to pause for just a moment to have a photo taken? People have been shooting indoors with less capable cameras for decades. Back in the film days, I was shooting indoors with existing light on f/2.8 lenses with ISO 400 film. Back them, a very popular pocket camera was the Olympus Stylus Epic which had a 35mm f/2.8 lens (featured here: https://youtu.be/i5kom_QXacI)

I had that camera and loved it. I took plenty of indoor shots with it. And I never used film any faster than ISO 800 because that was basically the limit of decent film. To say that the RX100M6 is "quite useless indoors" is just absurd.

Soo you want noise-free dark indoor high shutter-speed sports imagery on a 1" point & shoot?

What point & shoot or pocketable camera/lens combo would you recommend for that type of shooting?

I'd personally steer you to say a used D7100 + a cheap 80-200mm f/2.8 Nikkor for this type of shooting. Below 1000$ and smokes any small or mirrorless camera at any price point.

When output matters most, I'd rather have some more dynamic range than on a Canon ;)

Give it ten more years for Sony, with improvements in pro service and increase in presence at major sports events. It's already hard to ignore their 5 consecutive years of home runs, and it'll be even harder when they line up 15 years like this. Especially if they continue to deliver groundbreaking primes like the 400/2.8 or the 24/1.4.

I remember Nikon users saying the same nonsense back in the early 1990s regarding Canon EOS-- that Canon EOS had no chance of making inroads into the pro market because "a true pro photographer" would never leave Nikon. It was an "immutable unwritten law...this will never change," they said. By the late 1990s, Canon had overtaken Nikon in the pro market.

So of course true pro photographers change. For example, renowned photojournalist David Burnett (Robert Capa Gold Medal, NPPA Magazine Photographer of the Year, World Press Photo of the Year) recently switched to Sony after 40 years with shooting Canon gear.

Processing might be Canon's achilles heel. With a market shift towards mirrorless, I'm not sure they can, literally, keep up with the advancements Sony, Fuji and probably Panasonic have, or are developing.
