50mm F1.8 for Canon or Nikon

$125 | Canon | Amazon

It’s an old piece of advice, but still a good one. If you know someone who is interested in photography, has a entry level D/SLR kit, and is looking to take the next step on their journey, help them get ahold of a 50mm F1.8. The 'nifty fifty' lets in much more light than a typical slow beginner kit zoom, so its image quality is going to be far better. Perhaps more importantly, having a 50mm F1.8 gives a beginner photographer a lot of tools that they haven’t had before. The ability to shoot in low light at hand holdable shutter speeds, for example, or using a narrow depth of field to isolate subjects.

Canon and Nikon offer 50mm F1.8 lenses priced at around $125 and both are outstanding. Canon’s version even has a stepper motor for quiet and fast AF while filming video. Can you find sharper lenses? Of course you can, though they will be hundreds of dollars more expensive. Can you find a better price to performance ratio in a lens? We doubt it.
