Rode VideoMicro on camera mic

$59 | Rode | Amazon

In an age where even smartphones offer 4K video, what is the easiest way to make your footage stand out? The answer is improving the audio. Internal microphones are okay, but tend to be tinny, mushy, and generally do a terrible job of isolating your subject’s voice from background noise. Short of hiring a sound guy with a boom mic, what can you do?

A great place to start is the Rode VideoMicro. Compact and lightweight, the VideoMicro offers an all metal body, a Rycote Lyre shock-mount, and includes a 'dead cat' windsock. It doesn’t require a battery and can be used with any camera that has a 3.5mm TRS mic-in jack (smartphones may require a TRS to TRRS adapter). Despite taking up less space than a prime lens and costing less than $100, the improvement in audio quality and sound separation offered by the VideoMicro is impressive.
