German camera brand Leica is set to launch a new portrait lens for its professional S system that features a super-fast maximum aperture of f/2. The Summicron-S 100mm f/2 ASPH will sit between the company’s existing Summarit-S 70mm f/2.5 ASPH and the APO-Macro-Summarit-S 120mm f/2.5, both of which are also popular choices for portrait photographers using the S cameras. When mounted in front of the system’s 30x45mm Leica Pro Format sensor, the new 100mm lens will deliver a diagonal viewing angle of 29°, much as an 80mm lens would in the 35mm film system, making this lens a similar proposition to the 85mm f/1.2 type lens used on full-frame digital and film SLRs.

Leica’s lens uses just seven elements in five groups, and includes two aspherical surfaces and three glasses with what Leica describes as ‘anomalous partial dispersion’, which means the lens has apochromatic corrections – though APO isn’t used in the name.

The lens has an aperture range of F2-22, and a closest focus distance of 0.7m. It measures 102mm x 91mm without the supplied lens hood, and weighs 910g (32.1 ounces).

A limited edition of the lens is available now in a Leica S Summicron 100 kit, which comes with a Leica S camera. Both camera and lens are engraved to mark the edition, which runs to only 100 units. The kit comes in a Rimowa Topas Styealth cabin trolley, and the strap lugs of the camera are finished in black chrome for what Leica describes as ‘its particularly exclusive look’.

The lens will be on more general release from September, and will retail at $7995.
