Last month Sony promised to address a key concern of a7-series camera owners with a firmware update adding 14-bit uncompressed Raw support. The a7R II was named as the first in line to get the update, and Sony has confirmed that the firmware version will come Monday, October 19.

The firmware update will provide a7R II users a way to get the most out of that camera's 42.4MP BSI-CMOS sensor. We detailed problems with the a7R II's lossy Raw compression in a separate article, and while the addition of lossless Raw compression might have been preferable, uncompressed Raw will be a welcome addition for a7R II users.

Sony hasn't divulged which cameras will get the firmware update next. The a7S II, announced last month, will include uncompressed Raw built in.
