Navigator 1st Lieutenant Daniel A McColl (1916–1943), 303rd Bomb Group, September 1943

The navigator’s role was to direct the B-17 from departure to destination and back again. He needed a combination of good mathematical ability, navigational skill and concentration to maintain an accurate reckoning of the aeroplane’s position at all times.

McColl was aged 27 when this photo was taken, the son of a Republican state senator. He was married and had a 1-year-old son at home in Idaho. He was killed on his 35th mission (which would have completed his tour of duty) in May 1943, when his aircraft went into a spin and ditched into the North Sea. Five years after his death, McColl's wife remarried.
