Tech specs and more Google Glass details
Google's trying to keep consumers excited about its forthcoming augmented reality device by churning out a slew of new details, and even an app for a device that's still not yet in the hands of beta testers, so-called Explorers -- though some have now received word Google Glass will start shipping soon.
The MyGlass app hit the Google Play store yesterday, with a clear message from Google that the software is only for Glass users: "If you don't have Glass, then downloading this will be a waste of time. Sorry about that. But if you swipe the screenshots to the right you'll see there's a picture of a puppy in pajamas."
The app is an intriguing futher look at Glass, however, as screenshots reveal a bit about how the device will interact with your smartphone and your Glass-wearing contacts.
Google has also released the developer preview of its Mirror API, encouraging coders to start writing "Glassware" in both Java and Python. But perhaps one of the most significant signs that Google Glass is getting closer to the marketplace is Google's release of tech specs for the wearable tech.
Camera specs are unimpressive for a device that is otherwise futuristic: a 5MP camera that can record 720p video puts Google Glass's camera capabilities far behind today's leading camera phones. The display description remains vague: "high resolution display is the equivalent of a 25 inch high definition screen from eight feet away." Other specs are more definitive: both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity; 12 GB of usable memory, synced with Google cloud storage, for 16 GB Flash total; expected battery life of one day; compatible with any Bluetooth-capable phone running Android 4.0.3 (Ice Cream Sandwich) or higher.
You can find more Google Glass tech specs on Google's website. And if you're still wondering how this gadget actually works, this infographic may help.
