Enthusiast interchangeable lens camera roundup (2013)
24MP APS-C CMOS sensor | Optional low pass filter | Dual SD card slots
What we like:
- Compact, solid body
- Excellent ergonomics
- Great Raw image quality
What we don't:
- JPEG color response
- Focus peaking stops during video capture
- Relatively unrefined onscreen interface
The Pentax K-3 is the company's latest range-topping DSLR, which means another robustly constructed, well-proportioned camera built with photographers in mind. The 24MP K-3 does without an anti-aliasing filter, instead offering the unique option of shifting its sensor to prevent moiré.
"Has access to probably the most comprehensive set of lenses designed for the APS-C format"
The K-3 sits at the top of Ricoh's Pentax lineup, and includes its most sophisticated (27-point) autofocus system and largest viewfinder, as well as weather sealing. And, while the K-3 is unique for a modern DSLR in that there's no full-frame option to upgrade to, instead if has access to probably the most comprehensive set of lenses designed for the APS-C format, with plenty of good quality options for the enthusiast shooter.
The Pentax produces strong JPEGs, though the color response isn't to everybody's taste. The Raw output is excellent, though. Like its forebears, the K-3 includes plenty of well-placed controls on its relatively compact body, making it very pleasant to shoot with. Unlike its predecessors, it offers both a mic input and headphone jack for audio recording and monitoring, but we've yet to have the chance to shoot enough video to assess its quality.
Overall, the K-3 is an extremely capable addition to the market - to the point that it's hard to know what else the company could add to it.
