CDM Optics has recently been granted a patent for Wavefront Coding. Wavefront Coding allows traditional digital imaging systems to perform in non-traditional ways, by greatly increasing their depth-of-field performance. This system works by changing the phase of the light, instead of the size of the aperture, by doing this no light is wasted. Since the phase is changed, the resulting image on the CCD is out of focus and has to be post-processed to generate a sharp image. Anyone fancy a macro lens with infinite DOF?
