My experience with Ricoh GR, the version with 35 mm film, I cannot remember the specifications of the camera, is clearly bad, because of the performance of the objective. The camera might have been fine if you hadn't any need for pushing the scanned film on your computer, that is, you had easy, basic photos, but if you needed to adjust curves or make any other modifications in the photo, the limitations of the objective sadly became obvious. Vignetting was very bad! Frankly, I've regretted using this camera for my projects. I should have used my SLR. As to using iPhone, for example instead of Ricoh, it is very possible that you get better photos with Ricoh. However, the nowadays computational photography is so powerful that you can get great pictures with your iPhone, of course, technically not as fine as with a DSLR. Using your PC smartly can make those photos fine, especially, if you take RAW. So, iPhone photography is a nice alternative, if you do not need the technical top outcome.

F stops are fractions of the focal point of a given focal lenght. 18mm F/2 has the same diameter on any sensor (9mm) and illuminates it with the same intensity.

@Don Sata - BS! It has nothing to do with diameter. F2 provides the same light intensity (under given lighting conditions) no matter what cameras we compare. But a larger sensor gets more of that same F2 light. That's all.

For me It is never about the DoF. It is about image quality. FF gives me more than a full stop advantage over APS-C. Unfortunately, it is impossible to have more quality AND more DoF. DoF and the amount of light are uniformly connected and inseparable. I would love to have the deepest DoF and FF quality at the same time, for many things I shoot. Not possible :(.

Crop glass isn't smaller or lighter. Equivalent glass has similar size and weight. Only crop glass is more expensive. Your X100F is nothing like a FF DSLR with 24-70F2.8. And I've seen plenty of people using 24-70F2.8 on crop bodies. So, crop doesn't make you smarter.

I'm (still) using 6D because I like it very much. It produces beautiful results and has many advantages over something like the X100F. I enjoy its superior ergonomics and controls, much longer battery life, better built, much better image quality (no xTrans BS), huge variety of lens options and it is cheaper too ($1178 new, with 40F2.8, $700 used).

I respectfully disagree, Don. My Canon S120 is a great TRULY pocketable street machine. It's responsive, has the best menu system of any pocketable or even high-end compact. Great ergos for the form factor as well. 24-120mm equiv. lens starting at f1.8 and a very impressive sensor despite being only 1/1.6" in size. And it can shoot RAW and at 5fps to 12fps.

In the Ricoh realm, I posit the GR2 is better than the GR3 beause the GR2 has a flash and far better battery life. Remember, the GR3's battery life is rated without using flash (because it doesn't have one), whereas the GR2's battery life is rated with 50% of its shots shot with full-power flash. And the GR2 still has a better battery rating...

Let's not lump all GRs together. The GR3 doesn't have a flash. That's a deal-breaker for a pocket camera. GR2 is a different story.

And a zoomable camera doesn't need to be zoomed. But it can. To claim that ability as a liability is just wrong. And no offense, but a very counterintuitive argument. You won't find any photojournalist ditching their 24-70m f2.8 for a fixed 28mm. Why is that?

Yeah, the IQ of the GRs is better than the S120. But be careful belittling S120 IQ. You may just get embarrassed by the tremendous amount of exceptional S120 images people have posted online. Canon S120 lens is 5.2-26mm F1.8-5.7, which is equivalent to 24-120mm F8.3-26.3. It is not 24-120F1.8-5.7. It's a point&shoot camera. Nothing serious comes out of it in less than ideal lighting conditions. Or maybe you are carrying a tripod in your other pocket?

Don, you truly underestimate the S120. It is a capable street machine. Within reason of course, as its no DSLR and nor is any GR. The S120 is a joy to shoot even in Manual Exposure mode.

S120 ISO100 is like FF ISO2100. So, a tiny crappy 24-120F8.3-26.3 lens on FF at ISO2100 would produce images similar to S120. What could possibly make you think that such combo would be ideal for street photography? Some Googled snaps? We are talking about quality images here.

I may end up getting a used S120 just for carrying around now that you reminded me of the good RAW files it makes but I'd still wouldn't put it on the same league as the GR cameras.

Admittedly I rarely use my S120 now that I leave my RX10M3 with 2 spare batteries in a fitted Case Logic case in the car so I'm never caught off-guard when an opportunity strikes. Plus, I don't mind carrying modestly-sized gear if I expect to be snapshooting that day so now I often bring my D7500/16-80mm f2.8-4E or 28mm f1.8G (I know, 42mm equiv., and still a length I love for street) if I know I'll be shooting street.

But true, as surprisingly-excellent as the S120's little sensor is, it can't match APS-C. Not night-and-day as would be expected, but inferior all the same. But man, the huge punch that the S120 carries in its puny package! The more time I spend on this thread, the more the GR2 (not GR3) appeals to me. And a new one is $497 on Amazon. Hhhmmm...

I highly recommend you to Google and try to understand the difference between S120 snapshots and real high definition images. Maybe you do not need anything better than S120. But other people do. Please, be more open-minded. This GR is not a perfect camera, but it is a nice pocketable compromise with surprisingly sharp optics (for a crop). While the S120 is a noise-fest, compared to a real camera. I would just use my phone instead.
I've Googled your S120 images before making any comments about it. They didn't impress me. Perhaps your viewing display is too small to see anything. There was time when I used and enjoyed point&shoot cameras. The Canon G, S and SX series were great. But it is over now. When I replaced my old CRT monitor with a new high-def LCD panel, point&shoots became obsolete to me. And now I find it hard to please myself with APS-C quality. I mean, sometimes it can be enough, but I'd rather use FF.
Just get a nice 40-50" UHD IPS and enjoy digital photography.

@mxx: For years, I have heard from Leica collectors and those with inferior-specced cameras about "pure photography" and "serious photography". The Nikon Df was "serious" because the cost was the same as a camera with video, but it had no video. The Leica M-series is "pure" because you get parallax, and part of your viewfinder image is blocked by the lens, but you pay 3 times the price of cameras with autofocus and comparable image quality. So I think I'll stay with my impure, non-serious photography that I make money from as well as do for fun.

I can't explain some of the decisions made for this camera, without thinking after acquiring Ricoh that Pentax threw it's design decisions into the ring. Perhaps I am wrong.

Let's hope they bring out a mini flash. That said, the GR II battery was never stellar, and by reducing battery capacity by a third, I can't imagine how many spares one would have to bring.

At least with the GRii you kind of had to use negative exposure compensation almost always, or your highlights would be blown. Maybe this is still true for the iii?

The S120 has great pocketable ergonomics and the best menu in a compact that I've ever come across at any price point. WAY better than Sony's, but I haven't shot a GR, let alone the GRIII so I can't comment there. Still, I'd bet money on the S120 having way more efficient menus than any GR. As all pocketable cameras have collapsing lenses, they all have to open before 1st shot; zoom or no zoom. I can have my S120 open to 28mm so no biggie. It can shoot between 5fps and 12fps so I don't see your speed argument, other than just operation lag, which the S120 does not suffer from.

Sure, you'll argue that it's APS-C vs. 1/1.6". Yup, but the S120's IQ is quite impressive and can in fact make beautiful relatively large prints. And you'll argue that the Rico's lens is awesome. Maybe, but the S120's is pretty impressive too. And the S120 can go wider (24mm equiv.) and WAY longer (120mm equiv.). Continued...

All that said, I'm game to get a fixed-length "bigger-sensor" pocketable. Frankly, I'd love one and I'd pay $800 for one. And 28mm would even be the length I'd choose. But again, the GR is not pocketable because the flash will make it relatively gigantic, and having to carry 1 or 2 extra batteries would take up even more space in pants. And not even being f2 is weak sauce. Done...

RX100 is definitely pocketable, if slightly awkward in shorts. I have carried my m3 around in a shorts pocket and captured lovely memories.

I can fit my D610 with 28mm f1.8G in my cargo pants' cargo pocket. True story. Does that make it a pocketable camera? Of course not.

I can and do fit my S120 in my skinny jeans front pocket. That's pocketable. The RX100 will not fit in jeans pockets unless those are some really loose jeans.

But try fitting a GR3 with flash in jeans pockets, even really loose jeans. No dice, bro. 😉

I hail from Manhattan, the land of tailored clothes. An RX100 is conspicuous in a suit jacket pocket, doesn't fit in excessively skinny jeans, and is a bit bulky for preppy shorts, but it is definitely portable enough to go places that other cameras would not. I often slip it into a tailored coat pocket or messenger bag without issue and even have taken travel photos from shorts pockets.

The ability to carry a camera without having to think about it opens up a lot of options during life and travel. If you want to create a "fits in skinny jeans" arbitrary barrier, then we'll have to Chuck smartphones over four inches, too.

It's bizarre that someone argues with the owner of a product "I don't think you can do this" when you've done that thing..

I don't tailor clothes to fit my cameras. I get cameras to fit me needs... and clothes. And an RX100 won't fit in a skinny jeans pocket, or even typical jeans pocket except maybe in the back pocket: which is a great way to accidentally crush it.

You're also right about a lot of smartphones. Many are not front-pocketable in jeans or other fitted pants as they impede normal hip/leg bending. I wear jeans a lot and I'm not going to wear slacks so i can fit an RX100. And my smartphone is always holstered on my belt.

If you're talking about carrying a bag/purse, then that opens the door to all kinds is cameras. Cameras like a tiny D3300.

There is no way around it. The GR series' real draw is its tiny size. The GR3 is far from tiny with a flash... The GR2, however, fits the bill.

I don't think you understand the camera at all. I'm still shooting the original Ricoh GR and I shot various version of the Ricoh film GR before that and along side of it. The flash is a bit of a loss, but I normally put an external flash on it anyway if shooting at night. If you want a VF, put a OVF on the top. Far superior to a small EVF. If you have experimented with Ricoh's snap settings on the GR you are missing a big part about how this camera begs to be used.

To each his own, but if I'm going to mount an external flash on a camera, it's not going to be a pocketable or compact. A lot is sacrificed for small size and that is something we accept for the format. Lose the small form factor, and there are far better choices to use.

True, it's not as small with a flash. But for the type of photography one might do with the Ricoh GR, the compact flash often isn't strong enough to illuminate far enough at night. There is also the recycle speed issue with the built in flash, especially with the power set high. I have used an external flash on mine for that reason on many occasions. With the camera prefocus, stopped down and the flash power set it's great. The way it's snap settings work and S-AF my other 'better choices' can't be setup to work the same way as this little GR. It's not just the size, but the way it operates too.

I brought up tailoring to clarify that I don't wear cargo pants or baggy clothes. If I'm carrying a camera around it's rather compact! Again, it seems odd to dispute what people are actively doing, as the doing is the proof. I have carried my RX100 in skinny jeans. It is smaller in two dimensions than my phone (which itself is a fairly small model) though much thicker. In a coat pocket it's perfect, while in jeans and shorts it will be obvious that you're packing (though it's not uncomfortable, and I've gone the full day this way).

The product might not be for you, but acting as if there's no difference in size between an ILC and RX100 is ludicrous.

A 41mm thick (back to front of lens) camera (RX100V) ain't gonna fit in skinny jeans, sorry. Regular-fit jeans, probably, but way uncomfortable. Baggy jeans, sure, but you don't wear baggy anything.

Your RX100 has flash and way more battery than a GR3. The GR2 can fit in skinny jeans' or regular-fit jeans' front pockets way more comfortably than an RX100. When I see reports of people carrying their GR3s with external flash in their skinny jeans or regular-fit jeans' front pocket, I'll shut up.

Comparing small ILC vs. ANY camera that won't fit in a jeans front pocket is totally relevant. Who cares if an RX100 will fit in a jacket or shorts pocket? If I'm wearing jeans and a t-shirt only, either the camera fits in my front pocket, or I'm bringing a different camera. If bringing a different camera, the size difference between an RX100 and 4/3 or D3300 means nothing as I'll be using a strap or small bag.

With USB charging, they save the money that an actual Battery Charger would cost. Do they pass that savings on to the customer?

Ricoh has published calculated diffraction MTF curves for the lens (and kudos to them for publishing useful, honest information - few other manufacturers do). It looks pretty darned good - no compromise there.

Do all USB charges, charge at a standard voltage and/or speed? I've seen car adapters, home outlet chargers, and even power banks in case you run low. The laptop USB charger doesn't make much sense to me, because we usually need all the battery power we can get from that. Besides, why would you want to put extra strain on a laptop battery that you probably can't even replace? I think an actual charger should be supplied with every camera!

This is probably a misnomer, I think the GR has a snap misfocus function.
Smartphones don't need to worry too much with their good depth of field.
Modern high-tech but small mirrorless such as the X-T30 or the A6400 (with their superfast eye AF, face detect, and tracking abilities) would be vastly superior to a GR AF on all accounts (including, but not limited to, street photography).

With a A6400, you may just shoot from the hip, i.e. without checking or controlling focusing. It would find the eyes, the face of the person or dog or whatever living thing would distinguish good from boring street photography.

Reminder: good streetphoto is about the ability to catch volatile, spontaneous content. Not about just pixel-peeping like in some stills photography.

- Because it looks like a camera, it is neither inconspicuous nor pocketable like a smartphone.
- Because it has a bad (or just a pedestrian) AF, it doesn't capture scenes as agile as a "proper" modern camera with a high-end AF would do, which can do face detect, eye detect, or tracking stunningly reliably. E.g. like the new cheap Sony A6400, or the new cheap Fuji X-T30, they just smoke an overpriced toy like the GR.

So I would go with a combination to hunt for pictures:
- good Smartphone, and
- small but proper mirrorless camera with newest AF technology
and use the one which is more rewarding for a given situation.

You don't have to pixel peep. Latest smartphone full daylight images look too smeary on an iPad screen (unenlarged) to post on street photography groups. This is sad, because I have a number of good smartphone street photos. The content, however strong, doesn't cancel the wretchedness of the image quality.
