Somewhat agree.
My first SLR, a Kiev 4 with its built-in wonderful photocell light meter from 1970, remains as functional as it was in 1970.
My Canon A1 from 1980, remains as functional as it was in 1980.
...
But also my Canon 5D from 2005 remains as functional as it was in 2005.
Of course I can't say the same about some other brands that I have owned.
Some devices are built to last far longer than others.

Thanks for the tip. Actually I checked the light-meter on the Kiev 4 last week while I was looking in various bags for my 20mm Canon FD, and it is still dead accurate, although it has been stored in a camera bag (in the dark).
I'm still amazed how sharp the 50mm f/2 lens is on the Kiev 4.

No argument about Canon's pro or semi-pro line; they build them like tanks.
I have about a dozen Canon SLR cameras (including 3 of the legendary T90; the tank), and a large number of FD lenses (which I now use with my mirror-less Sony), and I have never had a single failure.
One of the lenses (50mm FD f/1.2 L) didn't feel quite right after being stored for 15 years. A local capable shop got it cleaned (internally), calibrated, and lubricated, and it now lives on one of my mirror-less cameras.
I'm not a fan-boy either. I use Canon, Sony, Panasonic, Kodak, ..., equipment, but never used any Nikon products (aside from some filters), so I can't speak of Nikon's reliability.

My assumption is that it's a combination of there being little room between the back of some lenses and the front of the sensor, and the fact that the sensor has a sheet of glass over the front of it already. Adding another layer of glass isn't going to make image quality or cleaning any better.

It's not so much the zero blackout as the combination of zero blackout, lightning fast sensor wide focus and totally silent shutter up to 1/32,000 sec at 20 fps. And no Nikon even comes close.

Gear of the year to camera barely released and an update of an exisiting camera. Nothing ground breaking at all in it. A9 should have gotten the award, this award is farcical.

Awarding a camera that can out of the box shoot 10 fps - or 8 fps with live view - at a whopping 42MP resolution with AF is farcical?

Yes, because the A9 is the greater achievement. After all, the camera you guys pretend doesn't exist aka A99II could shoot the same 42MP at 12fps a year ago!

We felt that a fast, high res camera with a full set of video features was more useful to a wider range of photographers than a $4500 dedicated sports camera.

The product of the year award isn't solely based on innovation, which is why there's a separate category for that. The new technologies (or, at least, the combination of still rare technologies) in the a9 saw it included in the innovation category but we collectively felt the a7R III should be the winner overall because it's an extremely good camera across more different types of photography.

Let's be honest, no other camera even comes CLOSE to the A9 when it comes to innovation.

A 'compact' camera (which isn't compact at all) for almost 2000 € bugs (over here on the shelf) is a little much money, even if the concept and the lens is stunning. It's not an APS, not even a m4/3 sensor, but costs a fortune. Might be a market for this, as for the RX1R II? Cannot get, where the market for these might be, waiting for a reasonable A7 II or A77II replacement, but why should Sonys bigwigs be smarter than those of the Canon or Nikon company, where the first sabotages itself by punishing the upper APS/lower FF user base and the second by refusing to go into mirrorless.

Because of the patronizing self-concept, the Canon-victims have had for years now, without a reason, except of beeing the mayority. If many editorial departments are affected, corrupt or bought and most forums are dominated by a biased, unathletic fan block, which behaves like a sect, concerning features and tools, you start feeling lampooned.

And such an ideological run-away situation threatens not only the market and the prices, it also threatens a whole technology to get stuck in the 20th century!

Post production is important! On Chip ADC is important! Noise floor is important! EVF is a benefit! Shutter speed and silent mode can be as important as video funktions. ...and not just market share, service and skin tones!

I just want to have the possibility, even when it tweaks here and there! An hot Sony/Toshiba sensor seems to be able, to produce lesser hotpixels and better IQ in long exposures /video situations than the 'cool' Canon opponent, but who was the baddie nevertheless?

There are plenty of compact compact cameras around and it would be helpful if people could still be directed to best of these. Why not have a bridge category for large fixed lens cameras.
The likes of the G9X, RX100 and G7X do not really bear comparison with the RX10 III and IV. The biggest zoom is always going to win if size and affordability are not a factor.

hmm... then how about changing the category to "Cameras with non-replaceable lenses - Compact Category" instead of trying to explain why a compact category is not really a compact category.

Michael; what you say is probably true for a lot of people, especially about printing (day to day). However, I am a landscape photographer where printing is still important, so maybe consider this: I could crop a 45 Mpix image to a wide format 2.2 : 1 ratio and still have the same resolution as a 5D4. Being able to do this from a single image has a number of advantages.

As much as I like having nice JPEG output right in camera, it's not the panacea you're making it out to be, except maybe for pros on tight deadlines. Preset profiles, custom ones, or even a little Snapseed processing can all take it's place...

It's hard to substitute the extra cropping leeway gained by extra MP tho, and even those that don't print big (or perhaps more so) will crop or zoom in (just a pinch away these days) to scrutinize details.

I have moved on iPad Pro 10.5 to work my photo (6D then 5D4)
I play sometimes with the 50mp of the 5DSR and 50mp starts to be something huge for the pro (which is a missile to process raw files of the 6d. Semi-missile with 5d4). With raw + jpeg my card is really becoming full fastly and raw files are big at 30Mp.

In terms of pixel count, the more the better, but in practice, for me, 30Mp is nice. Seems a good balance about file size/storage/process.

Sure you can crop better. This morning I tried to take a nice mountain with my 135mm. I crop the 30mp to 8mp and it was ok about composition. But.. i think I will buy a 100/400 ;)

There is nothing wrong with 5d iv other than the fact that it is a model of 2016. So it has been given reward in 2016 if you read back.

... and Canon makes those things that launch big heavy balls in the air, right?

Rishi, with your description even a GH5 and 100-400mm is compact compared to 1Dx II + 800mm f5.6. If you compare with exotic lenses, anything else is compact.
RX10 IV is an excellent camera and is quite luxury as well, but not compact.

Well OK then, *every* camera on your list is compact compared to a washing machine. If it’s that arbitrary, why have the category at all!

cosinaphile - that's a fair suggestion. We've always called fixed lens cameras 'compacts' because very few people understand what "fixed lens" means. (and some that do then assume "fixed focal length")

For most of the site's existence, your choices were compacts or DSLRs and even the largest 'compacts' were the smaller of those two options. The death of the small sensor compact, combined with the move to larger sensors even for superzooms has made the term seem increasingly inapt. We didn't really notice the full impact of that move until now.

I managed to make 'Compact/Fixed Lens' fit, so we've changed the name accordingly.

Mirrorless cameras without EVFs are very popular in parts of the world especially Japan. And the EOS M100 is the only mirrorless to come in at sub US$500 with lens. In the 'entry level ILC' that should count for a lot. The EM10 mkiii is too expensive to be considered 'entry level' in my book.

I'm not aware of any major quality issues...

I had many Sony products. TV, VCR, walkmans, video cameras, digital cameras. All broke prematurely. But while they were working they performed.

Common cause is "usage".

I have Sony TV's , wireless speakers, some hi fi separates, and home cinema. It all works great. Always had Sony for 20 years. Always been perfectly happy.

I've had Sony TVs, projectors, walkmans and cameras for years. None of which have broken from 'usage'.

All products eventually die. Without objective comparative data, these anecdotal data points are just that: anecdotal.

I am only reporting is what happened to me. Anecdotal or not. You guys can defend Sony all you want but it will not change my opinion. Plus their support sucks too.

The problem is that almost no one releases bridge cameras anymore and it made no sense to create a category of one that the RX10 IV would win by default. This is the constant challenge of trying to reduce the categories as much as possible just so that it doesn't turn into everybody getting a prize.

We have called cameras with built-in lenses 'compacts' for over a decade. Unfortunately the mass of such models that were actually compact has disappeared and the few launches that remain are growing larger and larger as their sensors do.

Think of it as 'best camera with a built-in lens' or 'best camera with a fixed lens (not in the sense of fixed focal length).'

Lol, all-in-one cameras, NILC (non-interchangeable lens cameras), "we pick the focal lengths, not you!" cameras...

Er ... then why not call the class 'fixed lens' (is that difficult?), much better then making a travesty of the language.

Compact indeed! Compact, for a camera, is always going to be relative to the human body and ordinary use (it implies putting it in a pocket or handbag and not really noticing it). There is no way that a brick like the Sony RX10 III can be called compact. (relative to a DSLR with a 600mm lens (dah!) does not cut it, seems an absurd justification, and implies illiteracy).

the a9 was hardly an "incremental upgrade" on anything, it's a breakthrough product... no camera company has anything close to ff 24mp at 20fps, with some of the best af ever put in any camera.

@sean65, canon not coming out with another underwhelming example of 5Dmark-whatever DSLR in 2016 doesn't kill the entire world of photography. Maybe just not great a great year for canon fanboys. Still, people are making smart photographic use of whatever they have. Trust me.
BTW Panasonic, nikon and sony have delivered great cameras for the year thats 3/6 of the majors companies.

Exciting because the Sony a9 broke past some of the last remaining strongholds of DSLR showing us what the future professional camera will look like, and smartphones this year show us what the future consumer camera will look like.

And both of those futures look rather bright.

I agree compact should have a size limitation to at being able to fit in a normal jacket pocket, not larger than many mirrorleess, just so it can have more zoom than many would ever want in a tiny sensor handheld camera. It’s a large bridge camera, that amazon USA doesn’t even show the RX10 (any) in the top 100 best selling cameras currently, two different Sony rx100’s are in it and the two Fuji’s.

We've used the term 'compact' to mean any camera with a built-in lens for most of the history of the site. We didn't foresee the near-extinction of the compact compact or the arrival of the large-sensor superzoom.

The noun has diverged from the adjectival sense.

If you can explain what the advantage of a larger sensor is, if you then significantly constrict the maximum aperture to make the camera smaller, then I'm all ears.

If it were a popularity contest then Canon would win everything, every year. We prefer to give our awards to the cameras we've used and been most impressed by, regardless of brand (though between us we liked the M6, SL2 and T7i, which may have split the vote, somewhat). This year it happens to have been Sony that has released some really capable cameras and started to address the UI shortcomings that made it harder for them to win in previous years.

However, none of this has anything to do with what name we use for cameras with built-in lenses. It neither changes which cameras we'd consider nor how we'd appraise them. It's the award for what we, as a group, believe to be the best camera with a built-in lens.

We do not care about who sells what. We really don't.

Sony has been making better and better cameras for the past few years and between the a9, a7R III and RX10 IV, they're pretty bloody impressive. I've never been a fan of superzooms (something I try to make clear if I ever review those models) and even I ended up quite liking the RX10 IV. That's why they did so well in the awards this year. That and that reason alone.

I'm not trying to redefine language, it's just that the way the market's changed has rendered our choice of term inappropriate. What term would you use to cover all the cameras with built-in lenses? This category is that.

You may regard them as boring, old-fashioned or whatever, but they are PROVEN, they have vast lens systems, professional servicing facilities, easy availability of rental lenses, masses of used optics and bodies available, and consistent design - which is extremely important to pros who can't afford to miss vital shots during the adaptation period when learning to memorise the controls of a new camera.

Nobody is saying Canon doesn’t make great gear. It’s just that this year, most of the most exciting new stuff happened to come from other brands. That is not some kind of personal insult.

Just the idea that a camera is boring shows where a person's interests are. It's what you do with the camera that's interesting (or not.)

anticipation - Yes, far too many people around here get over-sensitive and ultra-defensive about whichever brand they use. I use Canon and have no intention of changing at the moment, but I agree totally that nothing they have produced this year is worthy of winning an award, because none of it is best-in-class.

hahahaha. I will tell you exactly what "the real working pros are" doing.
Many of them have switched and some are waiting for their A7r3. And the ones who couldn't get on board yet are the ones are comfortable/lazy with where they are, or can not spend the $ on a new system. Can not blame them.
Many of them are secretly drooling at A7r3, some denying the truth big time. But all are watching the DPreview article today with envy.

Mike - Not being pedantic, but most pros I know (wildlife, sports, wedding) have no interest at all in switching to Sony.

Don't get me wrong, a7Riii and a9 are both great cameras, but pros are reluctant to change even between Nikon and Canon, because of all the shots that can be missed during the adjustment period (new controls = relearn muscle memory, relearn menus etc etc).

Those pros that have switched to Sony seem mainly to be landscape photographers, who don't need to worry about missing shots during the transition, because they work at a slower pace.

As a Canon user, I admittedly drool over a7Riii image quality, but if I was going to change brands it would be to Nikon D850 which delivers equal performance to a7Riii but has ergonomics that work better for me.

If boring means getting through a wedding with one battery, I’ll take it. If boring means there are no work arounds to make things work... I’ll take it. If boring means a full buffer that still lets me access the menu and/or keep shooting, I’ll take it. Canon and Nikon have 50+ years of ergonomic refinement. Sony copied a bar of soap in order to put a video cage around it. But hey, that’s exciting! Lol

You make a great point, entoman. Canon and Nikon have control systems that they’ve been refining, very gradually and conservatively, for decades. If you’re used to Canon, you can be sure that every time you upgrade your body you’re going to get something that feels familiar. Switching camera brands is a bit like switching musical instruments; sure if you play trumpet you could probably also learn to play sax, but it’s going to take time to get good again and it’ll be frustrating for a while. You need a really compelling reason to make the switch, and right now all three major brands make cameras that are comparably good, so why put yourself through that pain? Especially since Canon has *plenty* of chances to catch up, so whatever advantages Sony or Nikon may have this year could easily be erased three years from now. Pros are playing the long game.

prophoto - a more realistic thing to infer would be that overall sales of ALL cameras have declined by that much, because the vast majority of purchasers use smartphones instead!

Pros only make up a very small percentage of overall camera sales, so the CIPA figures for DSLR sales are not particularly relevant.

Certainly some pros are using Sony bodies alongside Canon bodies, with Canon lenses. A tiny minority of pros have completely switched systems, or to be more accurate a tiny minority of young emerging pros have decided to invest in Fuji or Sony.

The vast majority of pros (I'd guess 98%) still use Canon or Nikon DSLRs, and that's very unlikely to change until Canikon establish their pro FF mirrorless systems.

I think it’s fair to say that for newer photographers who are looking to make their first big investment in an ILC system, Sony’s stuff looks very attractive right now. If you’re not trying to switch from a system that already works really well for you, and you’re planning to make a decades-long career out of photography, Sony might well be the smart way to go. I wouldn’t count Canon and Nikon out or anything like that, but the *aspiring* professional now has three good choices rather than two. For existing professionals however, there is a huge advantage to sticking with a system that is already working well for them. In another ten years when today’s crop of new photographers are well-established and maybe (assuming current trends continue, which is a big assumption) Sony’s gear really is much better than what Canon and Nikon can offer, the landscape may look very different. This stuff changes slowly, though.

There are many reasons why "diehards" stay with DSLRs. Partly because they are tied to lens systems and to switch either to mirrorless or to another DSLR brand would be financialy prohibitive.

But also partly because we PREFER using DSLRs. If you believe DSLRs are inferior in every way to mirrorless you have a very closed mind.

BOTH types of cameras have their own particular advantages and disadvantages, all of which have been listed time and again on these forums and widely acknowledged by reviewers.

If you prefer mirrorless, that's fine. Try using it to take photographs instead of bitching about other people's choices.

Yeah I'd probably recommend anything Panasonic over an Oly to a beginner or as an entry level model (and I love my E-M5 II), BUT I haven't used the new UI on the E-M10 III so I'm A) gonna trust DPR that Oly made some strides in that regard and B) gonna give Oly some credit for what I thought was an otherwise underwhelming refresh. I would've *so* rather had OSPDAF than 4K as an enthusiast and stills shooter, but I get why the E-M10 is seeing the most refreshes in their lineup.

We consider the OM-D E-M10 III to be a better product than the SL2 in the entry-level category for several reasons. But on balance, we consider the SL2 to be a better camera for beginners/smartphone upgraders.

That's the difference between an absolute recommendation, and a recommendation based on use-case / customer type.

Barney - Just out of interest, how do you differentiate between those wanting an "entry-level ILC" and "beginners/smartphone upgraders". Are they not pretty much the same audience?

There's obviously some overlap, yes. But among that broad pool of people, there are some that want a first camera with the intention of pursuing photography as a serious hobby (or want a cheap camera as a second-body beside a higher-end ILC) and some that want point-and-shoot reliability with a larger sensor and nicer lenses.

We've tried to capture those nuances with our guides, but the entry-level segment is tricky. People self-select in different ways and shop with different priorities.

Buying the SL2 will give you a lot more choices for lenses than Olympus. Sure, some will never go beyond the kit lens, but for those who do you have the 55-250 STM tele, 24mm and 40mm pancake STM and the 10-18 STM ultra wide just to name a few. They are well matched with the SL2 size and weight wise. They are good performing lenses at very reasonable prices. And, of course, any EF and EF-S lens will work on it too.

Agreed. Canon (including third party options in EF mount) certainly have a massive lens system compared to Olympus, but M4/3 is quite well catered for, and I doubt that a beginner contemplating these cameras is likely to want specialised optics.

To my mind, the SL2 is a great little camera, ideally suited as a lightweight second/third body for someone already committed to Canon.

Or for someone who has a friend or family member who is willing to let them borrow their Canon lenses.

But it isn't a camera that I'd recommend to younger people who are brought up on smartphones and want continuity in the form of an electronic viewfinder - and probably won't like the clatter of a DSLR mirror.

The loss of a headphone jack has no bearing on our evaluation of the imaging capabilities of a smartphone. From your comments, it appears you don't understand we're evaluating the camera/computational photography aspect, not the smartphone as a whole (in which case we'd have all sorts of other considerations, like the display issues and lack of good / proper color management on Android devices).

You trying to make an issue of the headphone jack throughout your comments highlights your (irrelevant) agenda. Please take your conversation elsewhere (Google has many ways of providing feedback, for example).

I'm an audiophile and own a very high-end audio system, yet I'm not ignorant enough to not acknowledge that the headphone jack's lifetime is limited. Some companies are just choosing to move toward this future faster.

Btw, I'd challenge you to produce credible A/B studies that show the majority of the population can tell the difference btwn wired 3.5mm headphones vs. aptX Bluetooth.

I'm an audiophile too, and I've got about as much invested in personal audio gear (never mind the HT) as in camera gear, AND I don't think companies need to be rushing to kill the 3.5mm jack when it doesn't really gain them the much physical volume internally (still need some analog amp circuitry for the speakers, all you save is literally the jack's space)...

I don't even see what Google gets out of it (unlike Apple w/Beats). That being said, I don't think it's omission is the end of the world, certainly not enough to gripe about it on every single article that mentions the Pixel. As glad as I was that they kept it on the first Pixel (which I'm still using), I wouldn't rule out a device without it either.

People who want expandable memory on phones are missing the entire point of phones: they're supposed to be cloud-based, it's literally one of their biggest advantages. The good ones manage to do so in a transparent manner, optimizing local storage on the fly.

If you wish to be building up and studying hundreds of gigabytes on a device that can get stolen or broken any minute, time to rethink your workflow.

I even extend that to my laptop/MacBook. I could lose my iPhone and/or MacBook and I would recover without missing anything (images, music, spreadsheet, docs, Apps etc...) as soon I have a new device.

If there are ten times more Canikon users than Sony users, there are 10 times more switchers, too, in one direction.

The thing is that if you come to the conclusion you will switch system at some time, then the alternative cost to invest further in the ”old” system becomes high. You would invest in the old system although you will change system anyway. Alterntively you could have progressed your new system faster.

So buy an adapter and keep your lenses.

Depends on what you are using your equipment for. Some portrait shooters are switching over to a Sony simply for the Eye AF. It is an amazing feature that makes nailing focus super easy. It just depends. If you are heavily invested in another system, it may not be something to think much about. But there are benefits for some people that make the decision a very easy one. Why else are so many people switching?

I Just changed lask week coming from Canon. And yes, upgrading Canon A7 & Samsung NX1(not as much for samsung) to A7 RIII is like upgrading from my old G2 to my old Canon 20D.

I feel like Sony was very smart to build in solid adapter compatibility with their system, so that switchers don’t have to immediately re-buy all their lenses. Plus, used lenses keep a lot of their value. So if you’re a pro who’s switching to Sony, you can just gradually sell off your old lenses and replace them with native glass. Since pros do that with some regularity anyway, the transition isn’t too painful at least in theory.

it depends on your shooting style, however I can guarantee you that once you use a camera like the A7RII is hard to go back to Canon:
1) EVF is far more useful than an OVF, many would argue that the OFV might look better, however it is really hard to argue that it is actually better.
2) Progressively to use the monitor more. Sometimes VF is preferred over monitor, sometime vice-versa, some will argue that a DSLr with dual pixel AF is just as good when you switch to live view, I think these individuals have hardly explored this on a mirroreless if they argue that.
3) Weight, many will argue that most of it is on the pro lenses and the camera is just a fraction. Again shooting style, if you learn to shoot with fast primes the difference is huge
