Amazon has announced two new 'unlimited' storage plans as part of its Cloud Drive service. The Unlimited Photos plan costs $11.99 per year and an 'Unlimited Everything' plan allows users to store an infinite number of photos, videos, documents and music for $59.99 per year. Both services can be tried out for free for three months, starting now, and users who opt not to pay for the service after the trial period will be able to view and download their files for another 30 days. Of course, Amazon Prime subscribers already gained unlimited photo storage late last year.
Both 'photo' and 'everything' services are geared towards people who want both long term archiving and quick access to their data when required. A Cloud Drive Photos app is also available to automatically sync photographs to the cloud from Android and iOS devices.
Things get a little more complicated when you introduce Raw files to the mix. Amazon supports .DNG files, and has released a short list of cameras for which it provides Raw support, but points out that it's not a definitive list. If a file isn't recognized as a photo, it will count toward the user's 5GB data cap for other files, unless of course you've subscribed to the 'Unlimited Everything' plan.
At $11.99 per year we suspect that the unlimited photos service will be very appealing to a lot of enthusiast and professional photographers who are currently relying on physical drives for long-term storage. What do you think? Let us know in the comments.

Free 3-month trial available for customers to experience unlimited cloud storage of photos, videos, movies, music and files
SEATTLE—March 26, 2015—(NASDAQ: AMZN)—Amazon today announced unlimited cloud storage with Amazon Cloud Drive—two new storage plans for customers to securely store their existing content collections and automatically upload endless amounts of new content, including photos, videos, movies, music and files. With the unlimited plans, customers no longer need to worry about how much storage is needed to keep their content safe and secure—they can choose either the Unlimited Photos Plan or Unlimited Everything Plan and only pay one flat fee per year. A free 3-month trial is available for customers to try either plan:
- Unlimited Photos Plan (free 3-month trial, then $11.99 per year—equivalent of less than $1 per month): Store an infinite number of photos in Cloud Drive without worrying about taking up space on phones, cameras, or other devices. Customers can upload existing collections and store all future photos taken. This plan also includes 5 GB of additional storage for videos or other documents and files.
- Unlimited Everything Plan (free 3-month trial, then $59.99 per year—equivalent of less than $5 per month): Store an infinite number of new and existing photos, videos, files, documents, movies, and music in Cloud Drive.
“Most people have a lifetime of birthdays, vacations, holidays, and everyday moments stored across numerous devices. And, they don’t know how many gigabytes of storage they need to back all of them up,” said Josh Petersen, Director of Amazon Cloud Drive. “With the two new plans we are introducing today, customers don’t need to worry about storage space—they now have an affordable, secure solution to store unlimited amounts of photos, videos, movies, music and files in one convenient place.”
Beginning today, customers can start experiencing unlimited cloud storage for free with a 3-month trial on either plan. Prime members and Fire device owners who already enjoy unlimited photo storage can choose to sign up for the Unlimited Everything Plan to store videos and files in addition to photos. Existing Cloud Drive customers can change their plans now by simply logging into their Cloud Drive accounts.
