JVC Kenwood joins Micro Four Thirds with 4K Super 35 prototypes
Consumer electronics maker JVC Kenwood has joined the Micro Four Thirds standard and said it will develop products for the system. The company is showing two prototype 4K-capable cameras, including a compact, handheld model at NAB in Las Vegas. We stopped by the JVC Kenwood booth and got a first glimpse of the cameras on display. Interestingly, the company says both cameras will have Super 35 sensors (around 21 x 12mm), which is wider than the original Four Thirds sensor format which the standard was designed around.
The Micro Four Thirds system, originally developed by Olympus and Panasonic, now lists Carl Zeiss, Astro Design, SVS-Vistek, Kenko Tokina, Cosina, Schneider-Kreuznach, JK Imaging, Tamron, View Plus, Photron and Blackmagic Designs as members. Sigma also makes lenses for the system.
Information from JVC's presentation, along with input from commenter 'Lab D' has helped narrow-down the sensor JVC Kenwood is using. Altasens - a company wholly owned by JVC Kenwood - has recently announced a 'Super 35' 4k-capable sensor. The Altasens AL41410C system-on-a-chip is a 13.6MP 22.6 x 17mm combined sensor and processor. It can output 4096 x 2160 (also known as 4K2K, or Cinema 4K), or 3860 x 2160 (UHD or Quad HD) at up to 72 frames per second, allowing the camera to shoot 60p, 50p, 30p, 25p or 24p from a 21 x 11mm or 19 x 11mm region of the sensor.

♦ Exhibition of new 2014 professional video system and video production equipment
1. HD Memory Card Camera Recorders GY-HM850U / GY-HM890U
These lens-exchangeable compact shoulder mount HD memory card camera recorders feature a newly developed FUJINON 20x zoom lens with built-in autofocus and image stabilization. They support live streaming, file transfer and Web remote control over high-speed mobile communication network services. Moreover, GY-HM890U can be used with optional accessories to create a studio configuration, and is equipped with HD-SDI input to allow recording from an external signal feed. A studio configuration using GY-HM890U in a fiber system and a multi-core system will be displayed at the booth and proposed as a solution for broadcasting stations.
2. [New Product] Professional Blu-ray Disc & HDD Recorders SR-HD1350US / SR-HD1700US
These newest product releases in professional BD/DVD recorders are capable of recording directly to either Blu-ray Disc or DVD from a live signal. Since DVD-Video and BDMV format recording is supported, they offer greatly expanded playback compatibility with ordinary DVD/BD players.
3. [Upgraded Firmware Version] HD Memory Card Camera Recorders GY-HM600U / GY-HM650U
With this newest firmware upgrade to Ver3.0, the “live streaming” that was originally achieved with our GY-HM850U/GY-HM890U is now augmented with a “transmission error correction function” (on GY-HM650U), as well as a “50Mbps High Quality Recording Mode” that affords the superior compression efficiency of the MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 codec. A demonstration of live streaming, and a solution for news applications using a cloud server, will be shown.
