"Realistically, though, a number of AF functions will be limited due to Sony's own restrictions - meaning no Eye AF, no Lock-on AF, and no phase detection in video."
vs.
"Sigma is the first brand of DSLR lenses to support Eye AF and Lock-On AF modes on Sony cameras, as well as smooth phase-detection in video. What's more, they work really well."

As strange as that thick lens mount looks, putting the IR-cut filter close to the rear element of the lens is brilliant, as it essentially seals the sensor from dust. Dust specs on the IR-cut filter should have very little effect on the final image, as they will be far enough from the focal plane to have much of an impact at all.

9 AF points? I did have the SD10, the original DP and now the Dp2 Merrill and Dp3 Merrill I hoped to see something better in the AF dept, plus a proprietary mount to use some nice fine Leica, Zeiss... lenses with an adaptor

Kudos to Sigma, they are doing very well. Very nice addons to their lens lineup. New cams look definitely good too. I can understand why they choose to use SA mount instead of creating new one for MIILC, it just doesn't make sense for them at this moment. Foveon is still not for everyone, this won't sell like hotcakes, so it won't be profitable to do that. These cameras looks to me more like successor of SD1, than new MILC.
Anyway I wish them greater success with foveon and hope that other players will catch this train in near future too. But personally, I would rather see cams with full color sensors, like merril, not quattro.

I think most of us think that the camera companies are competing against one another. But in reality they are mostly Japanese companies that work as a monopoly. Their collective objective is to see growth in the industry, by selling stuff that are almost good enough but not quite there.

A is selling overall performance, b is selling small size, c is selling lightning AF, d is selling the best image quality.... So we end up buying into more then 1 system and use different ones for different situations and we change cameras every2-3 years. To be honest the camera industry just want us to act like that.... Not like the old days when a camera is just a camera.

So yes. Sigma was not allowed to produce a camera that crosses its territories and risk taking profits from the other big brothers

I'm afraid it won't be a symptom but a characteristic. At least (and that is very important) by using a CDAF/sensor-based PDAF there will be no more AF accuracy issues that all SD DSLRs were plagued by.

Great work, Sigma - I don't think anyone was expecting such a big update, but don't take a break yet. Give us a set of compact OS primes (like Canon's 24/28/35 IS trio) and a total overhaul of SPP. The less painful you make the workflow, the more buyers you're going to attract.

The center evf is mimicing the dslr ovf. Maybe because it will be using large full frame lenses for the h model and needs more face surface for stability. Not a small range finder lenses.

Would like to see how fast the processor is on this camera, since foveon sensor takes much longer to process and iso doesn't go very high on past cameras. Which limit its usefulness for most people. Probably a slow work flow if it can't use adobe editing software. Do like the look of the design though.

Hmm. So they have an adapter for Sigma mount to E mount. And are making their own cameras. Wouldnt that mean its about time for their 150-600 to have a new Sigma mount version, so we can finally get stability AND decent autofocus?

Surely there's enough room in that monstrosity to put the EVF in the right place. Maybe in the next versions.

And yet again, DPReview won't ask a direct question that's all over the forums and unanswered by Sigma: will the new 1.8 zooms work on the APS-H model? Of course pricing and availability is also a great unknown.

I'm hoping Sigma's quality epiphany has extended into cameras. These look really interesting.

The main question is - will this camera have the focus issues that their lenses have (through reverse engineering AF rather than working with the other manufacturers)???

I hope that Sigma remembered to put in a socket for remote wired / wireless triggering. These are low ISO cameras, great landscape cameras, born to be used on a tripod. My Merrills are tripod cameras much of the time.

BETTER AND MORE STABLE SOFTWARE (SPP upgrade). Maybe SPP runs stably on other operating systems, but on Mac 10.6.8 Snow Leopard, it (last Merrill version of software 5.5) is a disaster.

What Pentax should have done with the K-01.

Most of the time I can't be bothered to click through 10 etc snippets of of information. It has always been annoying.

Anybody else usually just use the subject to find proper articles from other publishers to read. The content is not always shallow sometimes quite usefull in these DPR slideshows, (very old hat slideshows 1950s 1060s thinking.) But tremendouly frustraiting because of the lost marketing and educational potential.

The forums are very useful but for months at a time I never even look at the RSS feed of homepage content because most of the time itt leads to this type of format.

Why are left eyed people complaining, when obviously the EFV has been put in the middle to accommodate either eye? Personally, I'd never buy another camera with the EVF in the middle, which is why I have a NEX 7 and a Fuji X-E2. Anyway, these new Sigmas are 1/2 pound too heavy and appear to be rather cumbersome, like the previous Sigmas. This article is supposed to be hands on, but only in photos apparently. However, if I had fewer cameras and were younger and curious as ever, I'd probably buy one to play with.

I hope Sigma will make UWA prime lenses for these cameras.
