Go wide! Hands-on with Canon's 11-24mm F4 L
Hands-on with Canon's new 11-24mm F4 L
According to Canon, the 11-24mm's front element is the largest ever manufactured for an SLR lens, at 87mm in diameter.
Landscape and architecture photographers will particularly be interested in performance across the frame. A brief glance at MTF curves on the wide end indicates excellent contrast across the frame even wide open. Sagittal (radial) resolution across the frame appears to be impressive even wide open, but meridional (tangential) resolution appears to suffer outward from center. It remains to be seen if astigmatism is actually an issue, though, as we've seen lens designs with low field curvature and very good sharpness across the field despite what appears to be marked astigmatism judging from MTF curves.

Though performance at extremes of the frame may not be representative of that on a native body, the 11-24 doesn't disappoint. Have a look at the new shots in our gallery
