Leica claims fastest in the world for its new CMOS S (Type 007)

Originally announced in September 2014, Leica's medium format S camera presents a number of key changes that bring it up to date and into line with the latest models from its main competitors. Although the S Type 007 retains the same pixel-count as the previous Type 006, the company has switched from its traditional CCD sensor to a CMOS unit that lends the camera more flexibility. The 37.5MP 30 x 45mm sensor allows ISO ratings above the 6400 previously announced at the Photokina show, with the new specification sheet listing a maximum sensitivity of 12,500.

Probably the most significant aspect of the new camera is the price - £12,900 body only including tax. That will surely force the price of the existing S 006 down - the Type 006 is being kept because - Leica claims - some users prefer CCD sensors. The S Type 007 is now available for purchase, but if the price tag is out of your reach you can still take a look at it in our hands-on slideshow.
