R5 is camera of the year.
A7Siii is disappointment of the year soundly beaten in low light by other older cameras and 4K lacking in detail and sharpness due to the inability to properly oversample. And obviously the weak 12 MP sensor. Its the new Nikon Df. lol!

This site must be doing a good job selling the $3900 R5. It’s been the best selling mirrorless camera on Amazon for a while now. Currently is shows as #2 but #1 is a disposable film camera. The $2500 R6 is #5 and Sony’s $3500 A7SIII is #7

I’ve never seen a $3900 camera in the top 5 before, let alone #1 for a week. And it’s the Christmas buying season!

Once the popular vote is cast, each member of DPR staff will get to vote based on the brand of gear they own. Barney Britton owns a Z7 for example, so his vote is worth a certain amount to go towards voting for the Nikon 50 1.2. So on and so forth. But if there is a dual user, they, in rare cases, don’t have to go with the popular vote. And this year being 2020, if Nikon or Canon wins, look for Sony to mount a legal case for voter fraud.

Demand would be there, only Canon is unable to deliver, and not just 70-200. Try to buy R5 in Europe. Delivery time > 3 months.
The best camera is one you have, the worst one that can't be bought.

We are in the middle of this little thing called a global pandemic, which has been known to impact supply chains of sophisticated technology gear. All it takes is a disruption in one component to create a delay.

Canon has been shipping R5's and R6's but demand is high. Their RF lenses have also been more difficult to find, but again, they have been shipping it's just that with the cameras selling so much that obviously breeds sales of the lenses.

Of course the new 70-200 f4 lens is brand new, a super winner in terms of design, and of course there will be a high demand. As to what has delayed shipping, who knows? But again, this is all in the context of a global pandemic.

I am amazed that camera companies have done as well as they have in churning out existing new equipment and shipping as much as they have.

What new Sony's? The A7c is readily available. The A7S III has been hard to get like the Canon models, because it too is something exciting to its market. Basically one could say the same thing about the A7SIII that has been said about the R5/R6.

The new Panasonic and Fuji models do not sell at the same scale as Canon or Sony.

But it goes back to the fact that Canon has made 2 very exciting camera models that a lot of people want. Add in the global pandemic which has to make creating the supply more difficult.

Oh, the A7RXX beats all of those with its subatomic photosites yielding 666gigapixels. I admit the cold fusion battery is expensive, but it does last 30, sometimes even 40 shots. It's good that it uploads directly to the cloud, because the image size is a little bigger than a memory card can handle.

Normally APS-C camera/lens should cheaper and lightweight than FF camera/lens. If similar price & weight, why not going to larger sensor?

I like Fuji color, but above camera/lens price & weight difficult to justify, especially for travel usage (city photography).

Those to lenses have virtually nothing in common. Different image circle, different aperture, different focal length. There is nothing to compare.

For travel purpose only, nobody will compare lens spec/characteristics 1 by 1.

Similar thing happened when novice smartphone user choose either iPhone / Huawei P40. Are any novice smartphone user check how fast the storage chip in phone (via Androbench)?

Most important for them only :
1. Photo IQ especially low light
2. Are it wide enough capture (family/friends) memory in the moment?
3. Price
4. Weight

P.s. 20mm focal length is suitable for vlog.

The same us true if you prefer, FF over APS-C or Sony over Fuji. Just go for it.

If comparing lenses and cameras which are not really comparable helps you justify your decision, than ok. I personally do not need that.

I prefer pictures...

If I put a 16mm lens on an APS camera and then put a 20mm on a FF camera, the images will look quite similar.

So, for me, they're quite comparable...

& weight, will choose which better IQ (FF sensor is larger, better in low light).

I like Fujiflm F2 prime which lightweight. However, dislike recently Fujiflm focus on heavy and pricey camera body/lens (e.g. X100V & X-T4 & XF 50mm F1.0 R WR). It feel like Olympus who push M43 price near to FF.

Although Olympus high-end M43 (e.g. OM-D E-M1X) is good, how many consumer willing use heavy and pricey M43 instead of FF.

Wish Fujiflm focus on produce affordable lightweight APS-C.

Don't worry, the bread-and-butter of any brand is the mid-range, where 90% of sales are made. When offered three bottles of wine, one cheap, one expensive, 90% of buyers pick the one in the middle, and supermarkets, restaurants, and camera manufacturers know that.

To be fair, 16mm on APSC is 24mm on FF. So if we are going to pick a Sony eq. it should be 24mm f1.4. Fuji 16mm F1.4 is about $1000 US. Sony 24mm F1.4 G is about $1300 US. Now, consider adjusting for f-stop difference between APSC and FF, one could argue FF 24mm f1.8 is a better eq of APSC 16mm f1.4. Sony Sonnar T* E 24mm f/1.8 is about $1000 US but image quality-wise is not in the same league as G master and Fuji XF.

For what Canon got wrong on the R5, it sure got a lot right. Maybe they realized how important it was to be first. Sony did/does so well because they are always a generation (or two) ahead with FF mirrorless, and Canon seems to want to have this advantage with 8k. I'm excited to see what the next-gen R5 looks like, be it a major refreshed V2 (with a new model), or a all-new design.

How so?

Many Sony A7/9 bodies lag in EVF quality, weather sealing, menus, battery size, higher ISO capacity, body layout, then the first 2 were incredibly audible when shooting mechanical shutter and only shot lossy "14 bit" raws. The lossy raws problem afflicted at least 2 other A7 bodies, one was fixed with firmware.

I like the A9's updated AF, and the A9II's. I like the EVFs in the A7S III and A7R IV, but of the 2 only like the A7R IV as a camera. Oh, and I can see how the fully flippy screen on the A7C could be useful.

Now, lots of lens options for the Sony FE mount. Sony's, and partners, are ahead there.

no, a9/a9ii are the only ff cameras on the market that don't use frame duplication/blackout in the evf, that real-time display in the evf makes it the best on the market.

people who actually own a9/a9ii know that.

the battery life comparison also puts sony on top:

a7c: 740/640
a7iii: 710/610
a7riv: 670/530
r5: 490/320
z6ii: 410/ 340
s1r: 360/340

so there is sony battery life, and then a big gap to where the other brands are at... it's largely because canikon in particular uses old inefficient chip technologies in their cameras, that throw off a lot of waste heat.

it's not clear to me how a camera that has terrible battery life, serious overheating problems, frame duplication in the evf, etc., makes it to the top of a dpr poll...

The beauty of the R5 is that is does so many things well. It has high resolution along with super rapid and pinpoint accurate AF. It kind of combines the best of both the Sony A7R line with the best of the Sony a9 product line.

The R5 also adds some cutting edge video features, which even with some heating limitations, exceeds what most other brands offer.

There is a reason the R5 is selling so well. It's not like all of those higher end pro's and hobbyists buying it are all somehow mistaken.

Sony does need to catch up in terms of ergonomics and usability. Their A7S III attempts to do that with a better menu and a full touch screen operation, and gets them closer, but they still need more.

The A9/II's EVFs just aren't good. Don't pretend they are, it makes it look like you simply don't care or don't know. And don't pretend the lack of EVF blackout, when shooting high frame rates with the A9 bodies, is an EVF feature.

Regards Sony A9/7 battery life being "on top": On top of what, A6000 bodies?
Try, as in don't cite ratings, a Leica SL body or Nikon Z full framed body before commenting on battery life for full framed M-ILC bodies and EVFs. Now, Sony has worked to increase the size/capacity of newer full framed M-ILC batteries, so the A7RIV, the A9II, and the A7S III. You should try that last's EVF.

I note you ignored Sony's lack of weather sealing issue.

My 5Div would easily take 2k shots at an event without changing batteries. I got 1500 recently before I needed to change batteries... I can't understand why you would say "terrible battery life" in practice.
Having limited video recording time in 8k/4k120/4k60 internal doesn't mean "serious overheating problems". All other video modes have no restrictions past the 30 minute arbitrary clip length.
Even without using the EVF high frame rate option, shooting fast moving internal events was not an issue for me when framing and tracking subjects.
Have you used a R5 before or just repeating spec sheet details?

-frame duplication in the evf

i routinely get 3500-4000+ shots out of one a9 battery, and it NEVER drops the framerate down like the r5 does at 45% battery charge.

Every well put TRU. Camera is not all about specs. At the end, it's about whether we as users enjoy using it. I had the Sony A6300 a while back. the menu system frustrated me and ergo just did not work well. I never enjoyed using the camera; dispite its stellar spec at the time. I ended up given it away couple years later. Product design is far beyond just technical specifications. Having well balanced feature contents ,useability considerations, and supports of product eco system covering majority segment of user bases will sell the product. As TRU mentioned, Canon R5 does a lot of things well. For anyone who is looking to spend that level of money to stay or get into Canon system, R5 is a definitely worth consideration.

no, the problem here is that some people refuse to acknowledge the real-world r5 problems, despite the detailed facts that i've listed.

The technology used to make the sensors doesn't automatically make it good or bad - only the final result. Not sure why you are saying that any sensor that is not BSI/stacked is not still a good sensor.
Battery life that can shoot >1500 shots on one battery is more than most people will need. Not sure why this ability is "terrible" battery life
Since you are comparing to your A9, doesn't the A9 only shoot 12fps with uncompressed 24mp raws compared to R5's 12fps (for 50% of battery) @ 45mp uncompressed raws?
The "serious overheating issue" is only for video modes that the A9 doesn't even support. The A9 can only shot 4k/30 video with a 1.2 crop.
If you are going to compare specs then please be apples-to-apples.

The R5 is the best overall camera at the moment. High resolution, video modes, speed, weather sealing and sensor quality. Battery life could be better but easy to carry spare batteries. Unique video modes that push the boundaries of what can be accomplished in a small body. Option for unlimited 4KHQ video recording externally. Canon has already announced Cinema raw lite for lower bit rates for video will be available in a future firmware release so this will mean longer internal record times or unlimited external record times for 4k120/8k30. It will be interesting to see this improvement.
There are better features in each niche in other camera bodies but I'm not aware of any bodies that are a better overall camera. Happy to hear your thoughts on this.

First, there were plenty of really great releases this year.

Second, I think it's a miracle...truly amazing... that given the context of a global pandemic which not only strikes at the supply chain but also many of the very reasons why people take photos, that the camera and lens companies made the very strong product releases that they did.

That to me is the real story of the camera industry for 2020...that they didn't give up but counterpunched with great new releases.

I think it is the Sony A7C

That is the only product that really stands out and brings something new to the table

Canon 70-200/2.8 stands out to me as well though I am not sure it is a good decision - dust will enter the lens. That is the reason older Canons of the same spec remained same size......

R5 is great but it is essentially building a lot on to existing concept.

12-24/2.8 is awesome lens. May be it is a bit unprecedented but.... nothing amazing

20/1.8 is simply little brother to the 24/1.4. It is may be more practical and cheap but so are many of the new Samyang lenses like 75/1.8 or 35/1.8.

Nikon 50/1.2 is a huge disappointment. Sorry guys. This should not be here at all.

Leica Q2 Monochrome, don't think there was a Q Monochrome, not for general release at least. So that's something new to the "table" from Leica--a first monochrome fixed lens large sensored digital camera.

Sorry, the Sony A7C is just a full framed Fuji XE3 with a Bayer sensor.

Now I think the Canon "R5" and "R6" are something new, for Canon, because of how bad the first two FF M-ILC bodies were from Canon.

Why do you think the Nikon 50mm f1/2, which I have not tried, a disappointment?

Yeah that tiny A7c EVF was new. Didn’t see that coming. The menus, sensor, etc. on the A7c sure we’re not new. Neither were the rest of the specs.
Too bad it couldn’t have the Sony tri-Nav controls from the Nex 7 from 8 years ago. That would have been cool.

Use the NEX 7 size and controls with a higher magnification EVF and then it would be amazing.

The shutter mechanism, IBIS and cooling is new. Heck the cooling is good enough to continuously record oversampled 4K for approximately 2 hours at 25 C.

I see the anti-Sony disinformation campaign is still alive today.

The concept is new. The experience of using a7c is new. That is the new part.

It is not the traditional a7 experience.

Trinavi was plain stupid, sorry. I had NEX-7 fir years and loved the camera for its size and capability but trinavi that was bad.

A7C in contrast offers rather refined experience in terms of ergonomics. I really enjoy the camera. It has few buttons and dials but they are some how just enough.

A7C is not new in terms of tech. It is new in terms of photographer experience. I love that so big sensor fits in very compact body while keeping most functionality on board. Honestly I would have been happy even without stabilization in similar sized camera.

Same for the Canon 70-200 or the Tamron 70-180. They are providing new experiences. I doubt that Canon or Tamron could not build similar lenses in the past. It is simply that now they focused on compactness and lightweight construction.

I really love that.

It is probably the best lens ever made. I really don't know and care provided the size and weight. It is over 1kg. There is a purely physical problem of shooting this for long time. My 135/1.8 lens that I consider super heavy is 950 grams.

In the past Sony came out with the NEX 7 which was evolutionary, a great mirrorless APSC camera with easy to use controls. They also released the A7Rii which was the first great FF mirrorless camera (I’d call it revolutionary). But for APSC users all they’ve done is rehash older cameras and sensors and in some ways taken steps backwards. The A6600 is larger than the A6500 which was larger than the A6400, and so on. They ditched the tri-nav controls from more awkward ones too.
And it looks like the A7c is the start of the death/replacement of Sony APSC. We shall see.

Canon made their 70-200 with internal zoom and internal focus in the past to mitigate this problem. Sony and Nikon copied this idea into their 70-200 and Sony in the 200-600 zoom lenses.

I do not think the new 70-200 is worse than any other zoom that extends. It may even be better than most of them.

The entire dedicated camera market is probably about a few million ILC's sold per year. So what you are saying is that pretty much the entire market would buy this mythical camera, or that the camera market would basically double or so in size with this unicorn camera.

I am sure that Sony would love it if they literally had millions of customers waiting for that high end APS-C unit and I am sure that Sony would give it to them if that were true.

I agree with MILCman on this one; the demand is not there for that particular model. These camera companies are not dumb: they have a pretty good idea of what customers want and try to give it to them the best way they know how.

So about 90% of ILCs are still m43 or APSC, and 75-80% of the revenue from everything I’ve read recently.

People want cameras with low specs. Almost no one wants 20 FPS for example. So the best selling cameras are entry level APSC or entry level FF. High end APSC and high end FF relatively do not sell well at all. They need their high prices to make up for costs.
It is very rare to see something over $3500 like the R5 sit at #2 on Amazon’s best selling mirrorless camera list like it has the past 2 weeks. It’s really the best selling mirrorless camera on Amazon because #1 is a film camera. #3 is the M50. #4 is the A7iii.

R5 easily.
It is arguably the best "do it all" stills camera. Its the only one that shoots over 40 megapixels faster than 11 FPS while auto focusing, and it can do it at 20 FPS.
It is the only 40+MP sensor that can fully readout in 1/60h of second. That's like 3 times faster than the A7Riii and Z7, and 4 times faster than the A7Riv.

Oh, and its the only camera that can shoot 8K and RAW internally for over 5 minutes. It can even do it over for over 10 minutes even though no camera can shoot 4K RAW internally that long. Oh, and it can also usually shoot 8K and RAW for over 20 minutes (even though no camera can do either for 1 second) . :D

They could have put a 10-12 MP 4K sensor in the R5 and it would not over heat, but then it would suck as a stills camera. They made the right choice pushing the boundaries and doing many things other camera cannot for even a second.
Even its only for 20 minutes there is a big difference between CAN and CAN'T.

A7r4 does 10 fps at 60MP 14 bit. This is faster than Z7 and A7R3.

I agree Canon have achieved a lot. Just your math is wrong.

To me R5 is huge but incremental. The 70-200/2.8 is innovative.

I am a still photographer and NOT really interested in video performance. That said, i think there are three or four reasons:
1. Potentially a groundbreaking camera like the 5D & 5D mkII were. Yes it overheats, but who else does 8K (at that price AND quality). Professionals can use multiple bodies and workaround the heating issue. But to be honest I have no really insight.
2. Great AF, resolution and burst rates in a well designed body
3. An EOS-R body that makes the expensive RF lenses justice
4. The politcal reason: People like to see an independant competitor to Sony, i.e. someone not buying sensors from Sony.

I shoot 5D mkIV and are perfectly fine and will most likely wait for the mkII version for several reasons (battery life, still loves OVF, body size, my EF-L lenses - they can be used but a full switch is expensive).

I voted for the R5 and the Sony 12-24 a lens that I wish was made for my 5D mkIV.

After years of products overheating faster than the R5 and it considered to be "normal", why is it such a big deal?
I can remember cameras that were touted as the best ILCs for HD video overheating in 10 minutes. And later the first ILCs to record 1080/60p. Later some of the first that shot 4K.
Now one of the best stills camera that shoots unlimited 4K that is the only ILC to 8K is getting scrutinized more that all those other "hybrid" ILCs.

I'd like to see you list of ILC cameras that shoot RAW video internally for 1 minute,

And then your list of ILCs that can shoot 8K video for 1 minute.

And then your list of ILCs that can shoot 30-40MP at 20 FPS.

And then your list of FF ILCs that have IBIS rated at up to 7 stops.

It rarely overheats in practice. You will sooner run out of memory card space than get thermal shutdown. I shoot short 8K clips as well as photo bursts at the highest setting each lens will allow me. I also get 33MP picture from the 8K video. Yet the battery lasts me for whole day, often for two days, approaching 1000 photos per charge. If it really got hot during normal operation it would drain the battery within hour or two, there's not that much energy stored there.

Makes me smile that some claim it’s better not to be able to do something at all rather than be able to do it for a decent but finite period ......a curious position to take up - and not consistent with the majority looking at polling, reviews and sales.....😊

I went with the 20mm f1.8 G at #1, the XT-4 #2, and the RF 70-200mm f4 #3... All three have some measure of broad market appeal *and* put somewhat of an emphasis on more compact gear. The other two lenses (however great they are or aren't) are the anthithesis of that, and I may just be biased against the R5 but I don't know that it really deserves the honor regardless of how big a step it was for Canon.

The #1-3 order was just personal bias on my part (I love UWAs and started shooting Sony this year, and bought that 20mm), I could easily see that flipped or re-mixed. I'm pretty jelly of that collapsible 70-200 tbh.

It’s either the R5 or R6. Nothing else was revolutionary or really evolutionary.
I am curious to see when the 2nd ILC to shoot internal RAW video will come along.
The Wright brothers were revolutionary for flying a plane 12 seconds. I’ve seen people shoot 8k internal RAW for 30 minutes. That’s 30 minutes longer than the closest competitor. ;)

The Leica Q2 Monochrome, the Leica M10-R, the Leica S3, and the Leica SL 50mm f/2.0, a lens which though announced in 2019, late, did not ship until 2020. The cameras are all significant evolutions, and the lens borders on a revolution.

I like the Canon "R6". But it's not revolutionary, and thankfully, except the lens mount, it's not an evolution of the Canon R and RP.

There have been monochrome cameras and similar lenses. YAWN.

Never has an ILC shot RAW video though. Never has an ILC shot 8k video. Never has a camera under $9000 shot 8k, and the R5 is about 1/3rd the price.
Never has a FF camera been rated at 8 stops for IBIS.
No other camera can track as many types of animals. There’s more no other camera can do, but you can read the specs yourself.
Add it up and not since the NX1 has a camera advanced past everyone as much.

It's laughable that you suppose that 50mm f/2.0 Leica SL lens just another 50mm full framed lens. However your reaction was predictable. This is not simply a 50mm FF lens, it's the optically best AF 50mm lens available.

ILCs have shot raw to external recorders for years.

The NX1 had one card slot, was not an especially strong higher ISO APSC body for the 2014, it shot the still not common H265 MP4 codex. Nice camera, especially after the FW updates, and the menus embarrass Sony and Canon.

All you've done is emphasize that you're not familiar with the cameras and lens I cited. Note how I put the cameras in the "evolutionary" category, and only the lens in the "revolutionary" category.

As you say: 8K isn't new.

IBIS: Don't confuse ratings with performance.

No, those extra 8MP really don't do much, unless you want to print a poster, or represent nose hair.

Assuming you're using a 4/3 or larger sensor, the thing that that's most important is having optically excellent lenses.

(Better lenses can help immensely with smaller sensors too, BUT smaller sensors, from 2019, have severe higher ISO limits that your say 2018 20MP APSC sensor won't.)

Excellent assuming you've used a good lens. But what won't be commonplace in 5 years is 12 bit monitors--so that'll be a limitation when using 6K or 8K monitors to represent 12 MP tiffs with anything like subtle colour. This issue will even be evident in 8 bit tiffs displayed on said monitors when compared to the same tiffs printed on good photo paper with even a 3 colour and black inkjet printer.

I like to crop like the rest of them, which is why I enjoy 24+ MP images but just for the record: a 4k monitor literally has fewer than 12MP. As for how pictures will look on future monitors - the same, because most people's eyes can't even resolve 4k at normal viewing distances. Yes you can pull out a magnifying glass but that would be silly.

DrewRick - Yes 4K monitors are circa 12MP, but they have 16:9 ratio screens, so if a photo occupies the full width of the screen you lose 30% from top and bottom, so effectively it's only about 8MP (very approximate figures).

I view my images on a 5K iMac, which has a screen measuring 5120 pixels across. A 20MP image is only fractionally larger, at 5473 pixels width.

Almost all images will be cropped, and in the case of sports and wildlife photography, cropping is out of necessity often quite severe.

Also, while the "normal viewing distance" of a 20x16" print is about 1m, people work much closer to monitors, typically less than 0.5m from the screen.

For my landscape photography, I can often get away with 20MP, although if converging verticals need to be corrected in post, it's far better to have 30-36MP to compensate for the areas that need to be cropped away.

For my wildlife photography, I regard 30-36MP as the bare minimum, due to the need to crop.

If you're really doing a lot of landscapes, I recommend using a shift lens.

Shift lens being the optics or no, with an optically excellent lens, 20MP will allow for large posters.

HowaboutRAW - I entirely agree.

I bought the 16-35mm for versatility, but in practice I usually shoot at the wider end and have to (or rather, choose to) correct converging verticals in post, which is destructive of resolution.

I found out, through experience, that it would have made a lot more sense for my particular work, to have bought a 17mm F4 TS-E, and intend to get one early next year.

But for the rest of my work, I need a lot more than 20MP. For birds in flight, and for much other wildlife, I need a margin for error when composing, to account for rapid and unpredicable subject movement. Hence my preference for at least 36MP and the ability to crop down from there to roughly 20MP.

For publication or internet usage 20MP might be sufficient, but I like to view my images full width on a 5K monitor, and ultimately maybe even an 8K monitor.

The R5 will likely be my next camera, but my more immediate priorities are 17mm F4 TS-E and 150-600mm Sigma Sport.

@HowaboutRAW Did you mean tilt lens to move the focus plane? I don't see how shift is too useful for landscape photography, as amazing as it is for cityscapes / architecture. The two were inherently connected for the longest time but with shift only adapters and lenses (like the ones from laowa) that isn't the case at this point.

No, I meant shift lens, mostly because that's all I've ever owned/used. And I used it for landscape--for example when standing at the base of tall waterfall, with my back to the parking lot. Not all landscape shots are of grand canyon like places.

Images that I've seen shot with the "T" of "TS" engaged don't look like they'd be real good for landscape imaging. But as I say, I've never tried a tilt lens.
