Nikon confirm DX 12 - 24 mm lens
Pre-PMA 2003, 15:00 TOKYO: Nikon has today confirmed the details of their first digital only lens, the Nikkor AF-S DX 12 - 24 mm F4.0. This lens and the DX concept was first announced in December last year. The DX lens line is designed to be used exclusively with digital SLR's with a sensor size of 23.7 x 15.6 mm (a 1.5x FOV crop factor), thus this lens could be used on the Nikon D1x, D1H or D100. On these cameras it would provide an equivelant field of view range of 18 -36 mm.

The first photographic lens optimized for photography with Nikon Digital SLR format sensors
Amsterdam, Netherlands: Nikon Europe are pleased to confirm the introduction this Spring of the first photographic lens optimized for use with the sensor format used in all of Nikon's digital SLR cameras.
The AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 12-24mm f/4G IF-ED features ultra-wide angle optics designed for the 23.7 x 15.6 mm 'DX format' sensor used in the Nikon 'D series' SLR camera range: D100, D1X, D1H and D1.
Delivering superb image quality from edge to edge the ultra-wide angle zoom lens offers a 135 format picture angle equivalent of an 18-35mm lens in a compact and lightweight construction.
The new DX Nikkor features ED (Extra low Dispersion) glass for high resolution, low aberration performance and a SWM (Silent Wave Motor) for crisp, quiet auto focus for wide-angle digital photography without compromise.

Focal length and Picture Angle Picture angle
When Nikkor lenses originally designed for the 35mm (135) format are used on the Nikon digital format, photographers believe that the lens' focal length is increased by a factor of 1.5. For example, a 12-24mm lens would become a 18-36mm lens. Technically, that is not correct. In fact, there is no change of focal length as one switches the lens from one format to the other. The actual change is that the picture angle of the lens is narrowed because the digital format is smaller in relation to the lens' image circle projected on the sensor. Focal length and reproduction ratio remain constant for the comparable viewed portions of the image. It is the picture angle that changes.
The new DX Nikkor lens' true focal length is 12-24mm with a picture angle that will vary from 99° at 12mm to 61° at 24mm.
This combination of reduced picture angle and a smaller image circle enabled the creation of the first compact, lightweight ultra-wide angle DX Nikkor lens.
