The Ricoh GR II is a modest update to the well-regarded GR, and the high-quality formula remains: an 18.3mm (28mm equiv.) F2.8 lens in a compact body with a 16MP APS-C sensor inside. While the update doesn't bring image quality changes, it does offer a chance to run the new camera through our studio test scene, as it will be an obvious competitor to the Fujifilm X70 when it arrives. The sensor in the Leica M Monochrom (Typ 246) is an interesting one. Without a color filter array, the 24MP CMOS sensor doesn't lose sharpness through interpolation, much like a Merrill-generation Foveon sensor or Pentax's pixel shift mode found in the K-3 II. The catch is, of course, no color. Is the extra sharpness worth the cost? Read more
The Sony RX1R II is the kind of camera that turns heads. With a full-frame 42.2MP sensor, fixed 35mm F2 lens, optical variable low pass filter and a 399-point phase-detect AF system that's much improved over its predecessor, it's just about in a class of its own. Canon's PowerShot G9 X and G5 X offer two distinctly different shooting experiences, but are based around the same 20.2MP 1"-type sensor. The G5 X provides an SLR-style grip and an EVF with a 24-100mm equiv. F1.8-2.8 lens, while the smaller G9 X offers a 28-84mm equiv. F2.0-4.9 lens. Leica has just unveiled its first full-frame mirrorless ILC, the SL Type 601. The new camera uses a modified version of the 24MP CMOS sensor from the Leica Q in tandem with a Maestro II processor, allowing ISO 50-50,000 shooting, 4K video recording and 11 fps continuous shooting. With early access to a full production SL, we've been able to test it against our studio test scene as well as in a variety of real-world shooting conditions. Read more
As far as pocketable cameras go, the DxO ONE is the most likely to fit into the smallest of pockets. Built as a companion to Apple mobile devices, it connects directly via integrated Lightning connector to bring your iPhone a 20MP 1"-type sensor and 32mm equivalent F1.8 lens. Nikon's D810A is an astrophotography-oriented version of the D810. It's the first full-frame camera dedicated to astrophotography, and is better able to capture the hydrogen alpha spectral line. We've just added Ricoh's Pentax K-3 II to our studio test scene. An evolution of the K-3, it offers a 24MP stabilized CMOS sensor with a clever Pixel Shift mode that uses the camera's stabilization system to record full color information from a scene. UPDATED: We've added low light results to our studio test for the RX100 IV. Sony's latest RX100, the Cyber-shot RX100 IV, brings the manufacturer's stacked CMOS sensor design to the 1"-type sensor size for the first time. The 20MP chip, also in the Cyber-shot RX10 II, pushes all the pixel circuitry onto a separate layer, creating room for high-speed processing within the chip. We've updated our Canon EOS 5DS/5DS R First Impressions to include studio test samples from final production versions of the cameras. The 5DS and 5DS R share a 50MP full-frame CMOS sensor and are identical in every way except for one: the 5DS contains an anti-aliasing filter, while the 5DS R has a self-canceling filter. While we've previously tested a beta version of the 5DS R, we've finally been able to put final production versions of the two cameras through our studio. Read more
We've just added a pair of compact mirrorless cameras to our studio test scene - the Nikon 1 J5 and Samsung NX500. The J5 brings a 1"-type 20.8MP BSI-CMOS sensor to Nikon's entry-level mirrorless lineup. The NX500 is Samsung's scaled down version of its flagship NX1, using the same 28MP APS-C BSI-CMOS sensor. The Canon EOS 7D Mark II is the long-awaited replacement to the 7D, which was launched in 2009. It features a 20.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor and dual DIGIC 6 image processors. It has a new 65-point, all cross-type autofocus system as well as an updated version of Canon's Dual Pixel CMOS AF system that provides continuous phase detect focusing during video recording. Ricoh's Pentax 645Z offers a level of consumer-friendliness previously unseen in its class. The 50MP CMOS medium format sensor is complemented by a number of features from the K-3 DSLR, including a 27-point AF system with 25 cross-type points. The Leica X (Typ 113) is the company's latest fixed-lens APS-C camera. While the X continues to use a 16MP APS-C sensor and a 35mm equivalent lens, at F1.7 it boasts a considerably faster aperture than the F2.8 of its forebear the X-2. We just added studio test scene images to our First Impressions Review of the Nikon D4s. The D4s is a refined version of Nikon's flagship DSLR, incorporating several changes - large and small - resulting from feedback from professional users. As well as minor ergonomic refinements and a slightly improved video mode the D4s also offers a highest ISO sensitivity of 409,600 (equivalent) - the highest we've ever seen. We just added studio test scene images to our First Impressions Review of the Fujifilm X-T1. The X-T1 takes many familiar elements we've seen before in X-Series cameras but incorporates them in more DSLR-like shape and with even more external control. We've been working on a brand-new studio comparison scene for some time, and we've decided to give you a sneak peek, using images from the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX7. Following the recent public release of Adobe Camera Raw 7.4, we've updated our studio comparison database with new raw conversions of files from the Fujifilm X-Pro 1, X-E1 and X100S. We've been using the release candidate version of ACR 7.4 for some time, which contained significant improvements to Adobe's treatment of files from Fujifilm's X-Trans sensors. The official public release version of ACR 7.4 brings some further (very minor) tweaks.
