Lee Filters introduces updates to super-wide SW system to fit more lenses and reduce flare

A new version of the Lee Filters SW150 system holder has been introduced that allows compatibility with a broader range of extreme wide angle lenses, and which has been designed to reduce the impact of reflections from the rear surface of fitted filters. The Lee Filter SW150 Mark ll now allows the existing 150mm-wide filters that were developed for the original SW150 to be fitted to four lenses using model-specific adapter rings - with more on the way. Read more

Adaptalux introduces portable lighting studio for macro photography

Adaptalux has introduced a new portable lighting studio, likewise called Adaptalux, which is designed specifically for macro photography. The design is modular in nature, allowing photographers to 'rebuild' it in different ways to meet different needs. This is achieved using a core Control Pod into which Lighting Arms are plugged, with each Lighting Arm being customizable in regards to color, beam angle, brightness and diffusion. Read more

Manfrotto launches miniature Lumie LED lights

Accessories manufacturer Manfrotto has announced a new series of consumer LED lights that offer portable continuous output for stills and video photographers. The Lumie Art, Play and Muse lights are powered by a USB rechargeable Lithium-ion battery that is said to deliver over an hour’s worth of continuous lighting. While the Art and Play models come with a hotshoe adapter and a tripod mount, the Muse additionally has a ball and socket head that makes angling the light easy. Read more

Italian accessory maker CPtech has launched a new holster in its B-Grip range that is designed for smaller cameras. The company says that its Uno holster will be suitable for compact system users, as well as those who own bridge and compact cameras. Read more

Novo to produce filter range using sapphire crystal and Gorilla Glass

A new filter manufacturer called Novo is promising a range of filters that will be made from super-durable sapphire crystal and Gorilla Glass, which should have enhanced scratch resistance. Lowepro launches weather-proof Fastpack backpacks for traveling photographers

Bag manufacturer Lowepro has introduced a pair of new backpacks to its Fastpack range, with added weather-proofing and a compartment for a laptop or tablet. The Fastpack BP 150 AW ll and BP 250 AW ll are basically the same bag in two sizes, and each is divided into three sections that allow storage of camera equipment as well as other everyday items for photographers on the move. Read more

Adorama launches Flashpoint Ring Li-On 400ws ringflash

Adorama has launched a 400ws ring flash which uses a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Part of the Flashpoint brand, it features a circular flash tube with an aperture capable of accommodating a lens barrel with a diameter of up to 3.5in/95mm. With a guide number of 82ft/25m the ring is powerful enough not only for macro work, but also headshots and full-length portraits. Read more

Eyefi launches Mobi Pro card with wireless Raw transfer

Eyefi, the maker of Wi-Fi memory cards, has today launched Eyefi Mobi Pro, a new 32GB WiFi SD card. It improves the existing Eyefi Mobi model by adding wireless transfer of Raw image files, along with new photo categorization and search functions. Read more

Elinchrom announces new ELB 400 portable flash system

Flash equipment manufacturer Elinchrom has launched a new portable flash system that promises faster recycling times, more bursts per charge and greater flexibility than the company’s current battery-powered kits. The Elinchrom ELB 400 is a 424Ws pack that can manage up to 350 full power flashes per charge and can recycle in 1.6 seconds after a maximum output burst. Read more

Nissin launches radio-controlled Di700A and Commander Air 1 wireless flash system

Independent Japanese flash manufacturer Nissin has announced a new wireless flash system that uses radio transmission. The first gun to be compatible with the company’s Nissin Air System (NAS) will be an adapted version of the Di700 flash unit. The Di700A will have the same specification as the GN48m/157ft current model, but will also feature a 2.4GHz radio transmitter that will be able to communicate with other NAS guns and the Nissin Commander Air 1 command unit from a distance of up to 30m. Read more

Tokina to launch water dispersing filter coating and IR-cut ND range

Japanese optical manufacturer Tokina is showing a hydrophilic filter coating that forces water droplets to spread into a thin film so that they become invisible to the camera. The coating will allow photographers to carry on shooting when rain or spray on the lens would otherwise obstruct the optical path. Read more

Marumi introduces fixed and variable neutral density filters, including ND100,000 for solar shooting

Japanese filter brand Marumi has introduced a collection of neutral density filters for its DHG (Digital High Grade) range including fixed density strengths of ND 8, 16, 32 and 64 as well as a variable ND filter with a range of ND 2.5-500. The company has also announced a ND filter for shooting solar eclipses. Read more

Ricoh releases inexpensive all-weather AF201FG external flash

Ricoh has announced the AF201FG external flash for Pentax interchangeable lens cameras. The AF201FG is weather-resistant, can tilt down ten degrees and up ninety, and has a  guide number of 20 meters at ISO 100. It also weighs just 141g (5oz). Phottix launches Indra 500 TTL mains or battery powered studio heads

Phottix has introduced a new studio flash head that can be powered via the mains in a studio environment or through a portable battery pack when flash is needed in the field. The Phottix Indra 500TTL offers 500 watts of output across eight settings from full power to 1/128th power and, according to Phottix, it can be synchronised with shutter durations as short as 1/8000sec. Read more

Light and Motion launches Sidekick companion light for GoPro on Kickstarter

Light & Motion has introduced a new GoPro companion light called the Sidekick, and is seeking funding for its production on Kickstarter. The Sidekick is designed to attach directly to the GoPro's existing mount, eliminating the need to carry an external light, though it retains some flexibility via an optional armature for positioning the light. Read more

Rode unveils RodeLink wireless audio system

Australian microphone maker RØDE has announced a new digital wireless system called RØDELink. It uses 2.4GHz transmission with 128-bit encryption while transmitting on two channels simultaneously. The system can monitor and change frequencies as needed to maintain the strongest signal, transmitting a 24-bit/44.1k signal up to 100 meters. The first product based on the system, the RØDELink Filmmaker Kit, will be of interest to digital filmmakers. Read more

Metz launches Mecablitz 26 AF-1, a pocket-sized flash for hotshoe compacts and CSCs

Lighting manufacturer Metz is to introduce a new miniature flash unit designed for use with small cameras, such as premium hotshoe-equipped compacts and compact system bodies. With a maximum guide number of 26m/85 ft at ISO 100, the Mecablitz 26 AF-1 is many times more powerful than the flash units that come bundled with, or built-in to, this sort of camera - and indeed many don’t come equipped with a flash at all. Learn more

Toshiba announces world's first SDHC card with NFC

Toshiba has announced an SDHC card equipped with NFC, claiming it to be the world's first. With the corresponding 'Memory Card Preview' app downloaded to a mobile device, the user can tap the card to view thumbnails of 16 images and see available storage. Read more

G-Technology launches new G-DRIVE ev rugged portable storage with all-terrain-cases

Digital storage brand G-Technology has announced a collection of new portable hard drives designed to survive in difficult environments. The two available G-DRIVE ev models, equipped with Thunderbolt or USB 3.0 connections, will come housed in what the company calls an ATC – All-Terrain-Case – said to be able to withstand a 2m/6.5 ft drop onto a carpeted concrete floor. The ATC is also water-tight and will float should the drive fall into a body of water, and can also be removed to house other drives in the G-Technology Evolution Series. Read more

Toshiba offers FlashAir III wireless SD card

Toshiba has announced a third generation of its FlashAir wireless SD cards. Like the previous version, the Toshiba FlashAir III acts as its own wireless LAN point for sharing to smartphones, tablets and computers. The newly introduced card boasts 'enhanced photo sharing and management features,' and maintains the same Class 10 rating as its predecessor. Read more

Canon wants to make Connect Station your photo and video hub

While it's been quietly shown behind glass on several occasions, Canon has made its Connect Station CS100 official. This compact box houses a 1TB hard drive which can store thousands of photos and videos. Photos can be transferred by tapping an NFC-equipped 2015 Canon camera to its top plate, or via USB or memory card. Users can then view their media on their HDTV using an included remote control. The CS100 can also share photos to social networking services via Canon's Image Gateway service. If you still have a spare HDMI port on your TV, you can pick up the CS100 in April for $299.

Think Tank launches Airport Helipak for Phantom Quadcopter

Camera bag manufacturer Think Tank Photo has announced a backpack designed specifically for photographers using Phantom Quadcopters paired with GoPro cameras. The Airport Helipak is said to accommodate DJI Phantom 2, Phantom 2 Vision or similar quadcopters with their accessories, along with a 15-inch laptop, small cameras such as GoPros, and personal effects. Read more

Relio is a powerful LED light in your pocket

It seems ultra-portable LED-based external light sources are the flavor of the season. Last month brought the Lume Cube, and today there is Relio. Relio is a 35mm small aluminum cube that uses a USB connection as power source for its LED light. It can be mounted on tripods and other camera supports using a 1/4-inch standard thread. Read more

WaterWeight rethinks the sandbag approach to stability

Photographers in need of portable tripod stabilization have a new option called WaterWeights. These balloon-like devices are made from PVC and weigh 139g / 0.3lb when in storage, expanding to a weight of up to 1.3kg when filled with water. A WaterWeight can slide down the length of a tripod to rest over its feet or can hang from its handle to keep gear stable. Read more

F-Stop Gear’s Kashmir camera bag is designed for women

F-Stop Gear has introduced Kashmir, a camera backpack designed specifically for women. Kashmir is billed as an ultra-light camera pack with a harness system and torso height adjusted to complement a woman's body, something accomplished through the use of an Ultra Lite EVA-padded hip belt and what the maker says are 'female specific S-shoulder straps'. Cactus V6 update adds Micro Four Thirds and Metz flashguns to wireless control list

Flash manufacturer Cactus has updated firmware for its V6 wireless flash transceiver to include profiles for top end guns from Olympus and Panasonic's Micro Four Thirds and Four Thirds systems. Firmware 1.1.004 makes the V6 transmitter/receiver units compatible specifically with Olympus FL-50R, FL-36R and Panasonic FL-500R and FL-360R. Read more

Vela One LED promises 1/2,000,000 flash duration for the price of a normal hotshoe gun

An inventor from Bristol in the UK is developing an LED-based light source for high speed photography, promising to produce a burst of flash with a duration short enough to freeze a bullet. The Vela One, which will be priced at a similar level to standard hotshoe flashguns, uses nine LEDs arranged in a bank that generates a million lumens and is powered by just four AA cells that the inventor claims will last a full day’s shooting. Learn more

German television and photographic equipment maker Metz has filed for insolvency according to German media. Metz is known for producing high-end lighting equipment including flash units, studio flashes, and video lights. Phottix offers Mitros and Mitros+ TTL flash units for Sony multi-interface hotshoe

Phottix has unveiled Sony versions of its Mitros and Mitros+ TTL flash units for that manufacturer's multi-interface hotshoe. Tiffen launches 10-stop ND range to prevent red-tinted long exposures

Tiffen has introduced a new range of neutral density filters that aim to allow stills photographers to shoot extreme long exposures without incurring the red colour cast that is so common with ND filters. Richard Franiec offers Canon PowerShot G7 X custom grip

Richard Franiec is now offering a Canon G7 X custom grip, joining the examples he makes for the Sony RX100 series, Panasonic Lumix GM1 and other small camera models. Like his other products, it's machined from high-grade aluminum alloy and attaches to the camera's front plate with 3M VHB transfer tape that can be safely removed without leaving residue. Read more

Sony G Series XQD format v.2 memory cards introduced

Sony has introduced a new line of XQD format version 2 memory cards, the G Series. As with other XQD cards, the G Series promises fast read and write speeds that are able to match the demanding needs of select cameras, such as the Nikon D4 and D4s. In turn, Nikon has announced that the D4s will support Sony's version 2 XQD cards, with improved write speeds and burst capacities. Read more

Fotodiox creates 'Tough E-Mount' for Sony E & FE-mount cameras

Sony's NEX and Alpha range of E and FE-mount cameras have a lot going for them, but some users have reported a 'wiggle' in the lensmount, especially when heavier lenses, or third-party optics via adapters are used. Fotodiox thinks it has the answer with its new 'Tough E-Mount' - literally a replacement lensmount for E and FE-mount cameras. With a single metal ring replacing the two (one metal, one plastic) originally attached to the camera, the Tough E-Mount should (according to the manufacturer) eliminate any movement between camera and lens. Click through for more details

Sigma updates USB dock for new lenses

Lens manufacturer Sigma has issued an update to the firmware of its USB dock to make it compatible with the new 150-600mm f/5.6-6.3 DG OS HSM S and 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3DC Macro OS HSM lenses. Although these lenses are available in Sigma, Canon and Nikon mounts, the update for the USB dock does not yet cover these lenses in the Nikon fit, and Sigma hasn't indicated when it will. Read more

Drobo launches Mini with 8TB pre-loaded

Digital storage company Connected Data has introduced a version of its Drobo Mini that will come kitted with 8TB worth of hard drives. Small enough to be portable and used by photographers and videographers on location, the Drobo Mini 8TB Bundle will be packaged with four Samsung Spinpoint M9T 2TB drives for the four 2.5-inch memory bays of the device. Read more

Epson launches Perfection V850 and V800 multi-format film scanners

Epson has announced a pair of high-end flatbed scanners that are capable of digitizing film in sizes of up to 10x8in. Replacing the Epson Perfection V750 and V700, which were introduced in February 2006, the Epson Perfection V850 and V800 will feature the same specification as the previous models, but will benefit from faster start-up and lower power consumption. Read more

Sigma announces liquid-repellent filters and clear glass protectors

Optical manufacturer Sigma has expanded its portfolio of lens filters with the introduction of four new models, three of which feature water and oil repellent coatings. Nikon announces SB-500  Speedlight for stills and video
