Studio scene comparison (higher sensitivities)

Despite Sony telling us the JPEG processing on the new model has been improved the A380's performance in our studio test is remarkably similar to its predecessor's and that is not necessarily a good thing. While we were not exactly overwhelmed by the A350's high ISO performance when we reviewed it in June last year the competition has moved further on since then and the A380's output from ISO 800 upwards does not look favorable next to its direct rivals.

At higher sensitivities the A380's noise reduction is smearing a lot of fine detail without really getting rid of the noise. Not only is there more detail preserved in the competitors' high sensitivity output but the Sony also shows visibly more intrusive chroma noise (color blobs) than the Canon, Nikon and Olympus. The Nikon arguably applies the most pleasing compromise between noise reduction and detail in this comparison, closely followed by the Canon and Olympus. The Sonys follow quite some way behind.
