Compared to... (Sony DSC-F717)

On the next two pages you will find studio comparisons between the Sony DSC-F828 and three other digital cameras:

  • The Sony DSC-F717 as the predecessor to the F828 and a benchmark in the five megapixel category.

  • The Fujifilm FinePix S7000 Zoom as the only other prosumer level digital camera to have a sensor with more than five megapixels (the S7000 has a six megapixel SuperCCD sensor).

  • Finally, the Canon EOS-300D (Digital Rebel) as a budget priced six megapixel digital SLR, many people have asked for the F828 to be compared to this camera (because of the similarities in initial 'bundle' price).

Exposure compensation was applied to equalize the tonal balance of the image between each camera (because of differences of metering and tone curve).

Studio scene comparison (F828 @ 8 MP)

  • Sony DSC-F828: Aperture Priority mode, ISO 64, Default Image Parameters,
    Manual white balance, JPEG 8 MP (3264 x 2448) / Fine, +0.7 EV compensation

  • Sony DSC-F717: Aperture Priority mode, ISO 100, Default Image Parameters,
Manual white balance, JPEG Large (2560 x 1920) / Fine, +0.3 EV compensation

  • Lighting: Two 800W studio lamps with dichroic daylight filters bounced off the ceiling

Compared to the five megapixel DSC-F717 it's clear to see the extra resolution the DSC-F828 has to offer, picking out and rendering elements of detail which the F717 can't capture. In this particular shot color balance is fairly similar in fact the F717 makes a better job of rendering the orange colored crayon (last crop). What we can also see in this comparison is the F828's higher baseline noise level (even at ISO 64) and tendency to produce slight purple fringing around reflective highlights.

Studio scene comparison (F828 @ 5 MP)

  • Sony DSC-F828: Aperture Priority mode, ISO 64, Default Image Parameters,
    Manual white balance, JPEG 5 MP (2592 x 1944) / Fine, +0.7 EV compensation

  • Sony DSC-F717: Aperture Priority mode, ISO 100, Default Image Parameters,
Manual white balance, JPEG Large (2560 x 1920) / Fine, +0.3 EV compensation

At a five megapixel output image size the F828's images look crisp and detailed and clearly have the edge on the F717. This is going to be the case because each output pixel is made up of one and a bit input pixels. Probably most noticeable on the bottle labels and the 'Wednesday' indicator on the watch face. Again some slight noise is visible in the F828 image (for example on the gray ruler crop).

The memory stick I need for this DCS-F828 is about 13/15" X 1/8"....larger than those on the market today.
