Image parameters

The DP1's only comes with adjustments for some very basic image parameters. You can choose your color space and modify sharpness, contrast and image saturation. These can be adjusted on a scale from -1.0 to +1.0 in 0.2 increments. The default setting is 0.

Sharpness

The sharpness setting of -1.0 appears to not apply any sharpening at all and therefore the image is very soft. The DP1's 'sharpness spectrum' is quite limited and even at the highest sharpness setting the camera's JPEG output does not look oversharpened. If you stick to the default setting the camera produces balanced output and you'll have some leeway for applying an unsharp mask in post processing.

Contrast adjustment

Adjusting the contrast alters the shape of the tone curve used to convert the raw image data captured by the sensor into JPEG output. A lower contrast setting maintains more of the original data's dynamic range but leads to a flatter looking image. A higher contrast setting stretches the grayscale (dark to light) of the image and could lead to clipping of both shadow detail and highlights. The DP1 provides adjustment with eleven steps from -1.0 to +1.0.

Saturation adjustment

Saturation adjustment allows you to control the strength of color in the final image. Like the other parameters saturation can be adjusted in eleven steps from -1.0 to +1.0. The DP1's default JPEG output is quite muted and colors appear washed out. Unfortunately the DP1's saturation spectrum is so small that it is essentially pointless changing it, and all settings produce results that benefit from a saturation boost in post-processing.
