Canon EOS Rebel XT (350D)

Below you will find a studio comparison between the Samsung Pro815 at ISO 400 and the Canon EOS Rebel XT (350D) at ISO 1600.

Studio scene comparison (Pro815 @ ISO 400, Rebel XT @ ISO 1600)

  • Samsung Pro815 : Aperture Priority mode, ISO 400, Default Image Parameters, Manual white balance, +1.0 EV compensation

  • Canon Digital Rebel XT (350D): Canon EF 50 mm F1.4, Aperture Priority (F9), ISO 1600, JPEG Large/Fine, Manual WB, Default Parameters (Parameter 1)

  • Lighting: daylight simulation, >98% CRI.

At the top end of the ISO scale the size of the XT's sensor starts to make a massive difference to noise, and the amount of noise reduction (which of course also removes detail). To be fair, there aren't many small-sensor bridge cameras that can do any better than the Pro815, and there are many that need - or at least that use - much stronger noise reduction, resulting in almost unusable results. In this context I think the Pro815, with it's more 'honest' approach to noise (i.e. leave it in and don't sacrifice detail) is doing a pretty good job.
