The Pentax K-7 is competing in the enthusiast/semi-pro arena with cameras such as the Nikon D300S, Canon EOS 50D, Olympus E-30 and Sony A700. This segment of the market is less crowded than the entry-level sector where the number of offerings can easily become too confusing for some consumers, but nevertheless all the major manufacturers have now at least one model in their line-up that is targeted at serious amateurs or price-conscious professionals who can do without a full-frame sensor in their specific area of work.
At the same time, just like in the entry-level sector, the differences between cameras are narrowing all the time. There are maybe 4 or 5 direct competitors to the Pentax K-7 but for the purpose of this studio comparison we've limited the the field to a slightly more manageable two; the Nikon D300S* and the Canon EOS 50D. For any potential upgraders we've also included the K-7's predecessor, the Pentax K20D.
Let's start with a quick look at how the competitors line up, including those mentioned above plus the Sony A700 which, despite being due for a replacement, is still Sony's most obvious K-7 competitor and the Olympus E-30:
* Please note that while we compare the K-7 to the Nikon D300S on this page the image samples on the following pages are from the Nikon D300. If required we will update this section once the D300S results become available.
The K-7's predecessors have always been well specified cameras and on paper the new model is no different. The Pentax offers, for an APS-C camera, a fairly high resolution of 14.6 megapixels. The movie mode does not quite generate 1080p videos but the K-7's video resolution is at 1536 x 1024 pixels higher than the D300S' 720p.
The body is for a camera in this class relatively small but the build quality is superb and environmental sealing offers some protection from the elements. 3.0 inch, VGA-resolution screens have pretty much become the standard by now and can be found on most cameras in this class (apart from the Olympus E-30). As we've mentioned above from a specs point of view these cameras get closer with each new generation but nevertheless the K-7 offers a few features that are not available on the rivals in this comparison. This includes in-camera HDR image creation and composition-adjustment through movement of the sensor.
Below you find a detailed comparison table of the competitors. Keep reading on the following pages to find out how all these figures and specifications translate into image quality.
