Compared to...

The K2000 is probably the most accessible DSLR Pentax has yet made, with its small size, refined interface and very reasonable balance of features and price. Its obvious peers are the entry-level DSLRs from Canon, Sony and Nikon, and we'll compare it to the EOS 1000D and A200, since they're the most similarly priced. Some pontential buyers are likely to also be considering the Olympus E-520 that offers a similar specification (including image stabilization) for slightly more money but we think there will be more shoppers priotitizing size rather than outright specification. Those people are more likely to be comparing the K2000 with the E-420, so that's the comparison we're doing here. (The image quality of the E-420 and E-520 are essentially identical so you can work out how the E520 compares anyway.)

Pentax K2000 advantages

In specification terms, the K2000 is a good match for even the most ambitious of its peers. It doesn't necessarily excel in any area but it keeps up with the best of them in almost every respect. And there aren't many more things that you could sensibly put on a camera at this level without it eating into sales of the model above. It's the only camera here to take AA batteries which can be either a blessing or a curse, depending on your needs - they're easily and cheaply replaced if you forget your own, but their lifespan isn't as good as the big Li-Ion battery in the A200 when using 2500mAh rechargeables and is downright poor with alkalines.

  • Slightly larger viewfinder than rivals
  • Color adjustable LCD screen
  • High level of customisation (Auto ISO upper limit, four levels of noise reduction, white balance fine tuning)
