Compared to...

Although the L10 is obviously designed as an entry-level digital SLR (with the emphasis firmly on friendly ease of use) the fact that it is only available with a (pretty pricey) kit lens makes it look a lot more expensive and nudges it towards an altogether different league. Of course it's not as simple as that; the L10 comes with a 28-100mm equivalent optically-stabilized lens with the word Leica etched onto the end. If you add something similar to the EOS 400D (the stabilized 17-85mm EF-S for example) the difference narrows, but the Panasonic will still cost you a few hundred dollars more. And there are plenty of similarly-specced models, such as the Olympus E-510, on the market now offering in-body stabilization.

Looking at the cameras compared here it's obvious that, on paper at least, the L10 offers specification that currently sits around the $600 price point (for the body), which would put a value of around $700 on the lens, which would seem to be in line with the last Panasonic SLR (the DMC-L1), with the cost of the kit being split roughly 50:50 between the body and the lens. For this reason we're comparing the L10 in this section with a selection of other 10MP SLRs with a body cost in the same region; $600-$670.
