Studio scene comparison (RAW)

This is our standard studio scene comparison shot taken from exactly the same tripod position. Lighting: daylight simulation, >98% CRI. Crops are 100%. Ambient temperature was approximately 22°C (~72°F).

For a (more) level playing field for comparison we also shot our studio scene in RAW mode with each camera and converted it using Adobe Camera RAW. Because Adobe Camera RAW applies different levels of sharpening to different cameras (this confirmed) we use the following workflow for these conversions:

  • Load RAW file into Adobe Camera RAW (Auto mode disabled)
  • Set Sharpness to 0 (all other settings default)
  • Open file to Photoshop
  • Apply a Unsharp mask: 100%, Radius 0.6, Threshold 0
  • Save as a JPEG quality 11 for display and download.

Note: this page features our new interactive studio shot comparison widget. Click here to find out more.

I was impressed with the video quality of the GX1 after buying this camera and works with autofocus which quicker than some DSLRs in video AF (except a few of the new dslrs with on sensor AF). Recommended for that alone, over my earlier model Pen. Panasonic knows video. Maybe Olympus is better now. I also have the Olympus 12-50mm and it records fine detail capture on the GX1. I recommend upgrade from the kit. I also have the original Panasonic 14-45mm, sharp lens with OIS which helps stabilize with video in a smaller lens than the Panasonic 14-140mm if carrying size if a consideration. Great lens also, and still can be found online.

Iam really like the design of the GX1, though I do have a few quibbles. It's a little bigger than the rest of the field, but none of these is sufficiently small with a lens attached to be considered significantly smaller than the others. It's got a nice-size grip and thumb rest, which makes it comfortable to hold and shoot single-handed, and it feels well constructed.
