Where the Panasonic FZ8's superior optics put the SP-550UZ slightly to shame, when compared to the Sony DSC-H5 (which is about to be replaced by the H9) it looks a lot more impressive, with better edge-to-edge sharpness and a much cleaner appearance (due in part to the strong noise reduction). The only area where the SP-550UZ loses out here is distortion and in its representation of reds, which still look very anemic.
