Picture Modes

Like its predecessors the E-520 features 'Picture Modes'. These adjustments apply very slightly different levels of contrast, saturation and sharpness and obviously the same results can be achieved by altering these parameters directly instead of using a picture mode.

Below are samples of our test scene taken in each of the Picture Mode presets, we've also included a 100% crop from each image so you can see the sharpness level of each preset.

Sharpness

We used the E-520's default, 'Natural' Picture Mode. If you prefer your images a little sharper out of the camera you can always use a +1 or +2 sharpness setting (although be aware of which picture mode you're in, because it may already have sharpening applied). You can clearly see the difference between the highest and lowest sharpening setting but even at +2 the output does not appear over-sharpened with little in the way of artefacts around highlights which we have seen in some earlier models.

Adjusting the noise filter, which had dramatic effects on the need for sharpening on the E-510, has very little effect on the E-520. We examine the noise filter setting in more detail on the next page.
