Studio scene comparison (JPEG)

This is our standard studio scene comparison shot taken from exactly the same tripod position. Lighting: daylight simulation, >98% CRI. Crops are 100%. Ambient temperature was approximately 22°C (~72°F).

Olympus E-510 vs. Pentax K10D

Camera settings:

  • Olympus E-510: Olympus 50 mm F2.0 lens, Aperture Priority, ISO 100
JPEG Large/SHQ, Manual WB, Default Parameters (Natural), Anti-shock 2 sec

  • Pentax K10D: Pentax 50 mm F1.4 lens, Aperture Priority, ISO 100
JPEG Large/Fine, Manual WB, Default Parameters (Natural IS), Self-Timer (auto MLU)
Olympus E-510
Pentax K10D
6,775 KB JPEG (3648 x 2736)
2,659 KB (3872 x 2592)

Here we can clearly see how both cameras have image processing that produces results that look a little soft - as noted when we reviewed the K10D the lack of edge sharpness does its JPEGs no favors at all. By comparison - even with the noise filter on - the E-510 actually looks quite crisp!

Olympus E-510 (NF Off) vs. Pentax K10D

Camera settings:

  • Olympus E-510: Olympus 50 mm F2.0 lens, Aperture Priority, ISO 100
JPEG Large/SHQ, Manual WB, Noise Filter Off, Sharpness -2, Anti-shock 2 sec

  • Pentax K10D: Pentax 50 mm F1.4 lens, Aperture Priority, ISO 100
JPEG Large/Fine, Manual WB, Default Parameters (Natural IS), Self-Timer (auto MLU)
Olympus E-510 (NF Off)
Pentax K10D
6,810 KB JPEG (3648 x 2736)
2,659 KB (3872 x 2592)

Once we move to the E-510's optimum settings the difference in sharpness is obvious, though you're not really getting much more detail. Whatever setting you use with the E-510, however, you're still going to see that harsh higlight clipping - the K10D deals with the 'roll off' in a far more appealing way.

1. I own E-420 & E-510 and both have the same problem with the incorporated flash: doesn't rise up enough so that in the image taken with lens hood mounted will appear a shadow in the lower part of the image.
2. At the E-510 you can delete an image by mistake because the 'play' button & 'delete' button are very close and there is no message to ask if you wanna really delete it.
