Picture Modes

As with the E-330 and E-500 and E-410, the the E-510 features 'Picture Modes'. These modes apply very slightly different levels of contrast, saturation and sharpness. The table below describes the relative difference between each mode (this isn't documented).

  Contrast Saturation Sharpness
Vivid 0 +1 0
Natural 0 0 -1
Muted -1 0 -1
Monotone 0 n/a 0

Below are samples of our test scene taken in each of the Picture Mode presets, we've also included a 100% crop from each image so you can see the sharpness level of each preset.

Sharpness

We used the E-510's Natural Picture Mode for these samples so treat the 'Default' as slightly lower sharpening than you would get in Vivid mode (which appears to be a step higher). If you prefer your images a little sharper out of the camera you can always use a +1 setting (although be aware of which picture mode you're in). Note that overall sharpness is HEAVILY affected by the noise filter setting which we examine in more detail on the next page.

1. I own E-420 & E-510 and both have the same problem with the incorporated flash: doesn't rise up enough so that in the image taken with lens hood mounted will appear a shadow in the lower part of the image.
2. At the E-510 you can delete an image by mistake because the 'play' button & 'delete' button are very close and there is no message to ask if you wanna really delete it.
