JPEG Image Size & Quality

Standard Test Scene

The Olympus C-50Z has three preset image quality settings which are all recorded at the full five megapixel resolution, they are TIFF, SHQ, and HQ. The next setting, SQ1 is preset to 2048 x 1536. In addition the SQ2 preset can be programmed to an image sizes of 1600 x 1200, 1280 x 960, 1024 x 768 or 640 x 480.

To give an impression of what some of the combinations of image size and quality produce the table below is a cross reference of some of them:

  • 2560 x 1920 TIFF
  • 2560 x 1920 JPEG SHQ
  • 2560 x 1920 JPEG HQ
  • 2048 x 1536 JPEG SQ1
  • 1600 x 1200 JPEG SQ2
  • 1024 x 768 JPEG SQ2

Images below are cropped 240 x 100 area of the image magnified 200% (nearest neighbour).

The C-50Z's SHQ JPEG setting uses a relatively low compression ratio, this delivers very clean images (without JPEG artifacts) which are difficult to distinguish from TIFF (I hardly think many C-50Z owners will shoot TIFF). JPEG artifacts are visible in HQ, SQ1 and especially SQ2 quality images, it's a shame you can't select image size and JPEG quality separately. The C-50Z's downsampling interpolation algorithm appears to be fairly primitive which leaves lower resolution images looking slightly jagged (no aliasing between pixels).

Image parameters

The C-50Z provides some limited ability to alter the image processing parameters applied to images before they are converted to their output format. It provides three levels of contrast and three levels of sharpening to choose from.
